But the situation in my country, Argentina, has its roots in a huge external debt contracted by assorted military governments and ineffectual civil governments that alternated in power since the 1950s. Nobody knows where most of the debt money has gone. It wasn't invested in Argentina, you can be sure. Now that debt is expected to be honored at the expense of harsh economic measures that, obviously, are resisted by the people. Nothing that Alfons�n could say made Argentina worse. Rather he is speaking for the rest of the country: Argentina cannot pay because there is nothing left to pay with. There is no more energy from the exhausted, unemployed, barely surviving families. There are no more resources from the drained small businesses or the few local manufacturers left struggling to survive the globalization onslaught. The middle class almost has disappeared. Unemployment is more than 20 percent. Argentines in their 20s and 30s are leaving the country for Europe or the United States. Have you checked the Argentine community in Miami in the last three years? This matter is an open wound for many of us who had to leave our country to give a viable future to our children.
