The unemployment rate stood at 15.8 percent in June, with 2,849,000 people out of work. The finance ministry expects the number of unemployed to swell to 3,127,000 by the end of the year, PAP news agency reported. Growth in gross domestic product (GDP) slowed to 1.5 percent in the second quarter of this year from 2.3 percent in the first quarter, and full-year growth could be as low as two percent this year, the agency said. Without reforms of the labor market, economists have calculated that Poland needs at least nine-percent GDP growth this year to create enough jobs to keep the unemployment rate steady, as students born during the 1980s baby boom enter the job market.
