KIM JONG IL APPRECIATES RUSSIA'S REFORMS AND WISHES IT SUCCESS AND
PROSPERITY

MOSCOW, August 4, 2001. /From RIA Novosti correspondent Natalia
Gorbunova/--The North Korean leader has highly appraised Russia's current
reforms. "We appreciate the positive changes in Russia," said Kim Jong Il,
addressing the Russian and North Korean delegations during talks in the
Kremlin.

According to Kim, his visit to Russia allowed him to witness "the
strengthening of the country's political and economic systems and the rise
of its international prestige." The North Korean leader wished Russia
"further success" in its effort to achieve political and economic stability
and prosperity.

Kim also noted that Vladimir Putin's visit to Pyongyang last year turned out
to be "a turning-point that marked the beginning of a new phase in our
relations." "Russia happens to be our neighbour, and historically we
understand each other very well," he said.
