A police patrol car was ambushed on Tuesday by suspected militants of the �Sendero Luminoso� (Shining Light) in the province of Satipo (300km north-east of Lima). The previous day another group of suspected guerrillas carried out an attack in the nearby village of Cutivireni, inhabited by Ash�ninka Indians. The ambushed policemen had been sent to the area after the attack. The �Sendero Luminoso� suffered a hard blow during the 10 years of government of ousted president Alberto Fujimori. In 1992 its leader Abimael Guzman was arrested and is still detained at the El Callao military base in Lima, where also Fujimori�s former right-hand man, Vladimiro Montesinos, is held.
