August Revolution and National Day marked nationwide
Many cultural activities are being held across the country to celebrate the
56th anniversary of the August Revolution (August 19) and the upcoming
National Day (September 2).
The Vietnam Revolutionary Museum on August 19 opened a showroom entitled '56
Years of National Construction and Defence along President Ho Chi Minh's
Path.'
With about 300 artefacts, material and pictures, the exhibition helps
visitors understand more about President Ho Chi Minh and his thought about
national construction and defence and about the struggles and achievements
of the Vietnamese people over the past 56 years.
Leaders of Hanoi went to burn incense at the monument to those who died of
starvation in 1945 at Vinh Tuy ward, Hai Ba Trung district.
Also in the capital, many art performances were held in cultural centres and
squares.
The Committee for Ethnic Minorities and Mountainous Areas and the Vietnam
Photographers' Association opened a photo display room entitled 'Return to
Viet Bac' at 29 Hang Bai Street, Hanoi. On display are over 100 photos taken
by 24 photographers on the land, people and life of ethnic minority people.
This is also to mark the 55th founding anniversary of the committee.
The Ho Chi Minh City Cinematography Company launched a Vietnamese film
programme from August 18 to September 8.
The Lao Cai northern mountainous province's mobile teams gave performances
and disseminated information for people in remote and far-flung areas on the
meaning of the August Revolution and National Day. Films on the theme of
revolution were also shown for the local people.
The Department of Culture of Ha Tay northern province displayed 100 photos
on Vietnam's revolutionary history.
The authorities of Ninh Thuan province held talks on Vietnam's history, met
with history witnesses who took part in seizing power during the August
Revolution days and visited families benefiting from the priority policy of
the Party and State.

VND 15 billion for child support programme
The Vietnam Fund for Child Support has decided to grant more than VND 15
billion (US $1 million) to programmes of action for children this year.
In addition to scholarship programmes, the fund will carry out a number of
other programmes.
The first programme is for 2,000 children suffering from eye diseases and
700 children with cleft palate and harelip. These children will be given
free surgery. The second programme deals with the rehabilitating and caring
for 400 disabled children and those affected by Agent Orange in the central
provinces of Quang Tri and Quang Nam as well as the southern provinces of
Dong Nai and Ben Tre. The third programme will help disadvantaged children
in the provinces of Ha Nam, Thanh Hoa, Quang Ngai and Can Tho. In addition,
there are also programmes to support health care, education, child
protection and care in 20 border communes, as well as programme to build
classrooms for children living in remote areas and in the Mekong Delta.

Ho Chi Minh City Expo 2001 to be held
An international exhibition on Vietnam-made goods, Ho Chi Minh City-EXPO
2001, is expected to be held in Ho Chi Minh City from October 10-15.
As many as 245 businesses have so far this year registered to display their
products at 334 stalls at the exhibition, announced the city's trade service
on August 17.
The exhibition will be an opportunity for Vietnamese businesses to seek
partners and expand outlets for products.
Foreign businesses have registered to take part in the exhibition, including
the US Amcham, Japan's Jetro, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, Trade
New Zealand, Australia's Austrade, India's Incham and Italian Trade
Commission.
Seminars on export promotion to traditional and new markets such as the
United States, Japan and EU are to be held during the exhibition. (VNA)

Whirlwinds hit Cu Chi and Bac Lieu
A strong whirlwind hit three communes of Phuoc Thanh, Tan Thanh and Tan Phu
Trung in Cu Chi district, Ho Chi Minh City on August 15, making 57 houses
roofless.
The local authorities have provided each affected household with VND 500,000
worth of canvas and money to help them stabilise their lives.
A downpour together with whirlwind struck Bac Lieu southern province's two
districts of Hong Dan and Phuoc Long on August 18, injuring one person and
pulling down 45 houses.
The natural calamity also damaged an other 11 houses and many fruit trees.
The local administration has supported each affected household with VND
200,000 and worked out measures to overcome the aftermath.

Heavy rains damage Dak Lak's crops
Heavy rains and floodwater from the upstream hit Ea Sup district, Dak Lak
Central Highlands province from August 13 to 19.
Floodwater submerged 164 hectares of summer autumn rice and 70 hectares of
food crops.

Cao Bang volunteers help people in flooded areas
Ninety young people of the Public Security, Border Army, Youth Union and the
Military Command, on August 17, volunteered to go to the recently flood hit
Phong Chau commune, Trung Khanh district, to help the local people overcome
the flood aftermath.
The young volunteers have levelled the roads and dredged the muddy
irrigation canals. They have also held talks on establishment of young
people's business and strengthening the Youth Union's movements.
