Landmine Blast Kills 10 Policemen in South India

  NEW DELHI, August 20 (Xinhua) -- Ten policemen were killed and
two others critically injured on Monday in a landmine blast
triggered by the outlawed People's War Group near a remote village
in south India, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

   The policemen, who were on their way to a village in Andhra
Pradesh for security arrangements for local elections, were killed
when the jeep carrying them was blown up by the blast around 11 a.
m. local time, it said.

   As the extremists hiding behind a culvert set off the landmine,
the vehicle was blown to smithereens, killing a sub-inspector,
eight policemen and a driver on the spot, the police told the PTI.
   Two other policemen were critically injured in the blast in
what was being viewed as a major strike in the area by the
outlawed group recently.
