VNA August Revolution, National Day marked Various activities are being held across the country to celebrate the 56th anniversary of the August Revolution (August 19) and the National Day (September 2). A get-together for 150 war veterans who were imprisoned by the enemy during the wars was held in Tra Vinh province. Tra Vinh provincial authorities have presented Certificates of Merit to 16 war veterans for their contributions to the wars of resistance and the national construction. Joining the national events, the coal mining sector tried to increase the amount of coal for sale from 11 million tonnes as planned to 12 million tonnes. The sector is now striving to sell 500,000 tonnes more, bringing the amount of coal for sale this year to 12.5 million tonnes. An exchange, ' Following the Elders,' between 100 Youth Union members and young people and veteran staff of the post sector of Quang Nam province was held in Tam Ky town. About 300 staff from 32 Public Security units in the province took part in the festival. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ha Giang celebrates 110th founding anniversary National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Van An travelled to Ha Giang northern mountainous province on the China-Vietnam border to attend a meeting to mark the province's 110th founding anniversary held on August 20. Mr An, who is also a Politburo member, praised ethnic minority people of Ha Giang, who devoted their whole life to protect national independence and peace. He affirmed that the history of 110 years of development of Ha Giang province was the history of the patriotic spirit, the unity among nationalities, self-reliance, bravery, industriousness and creativity of ethnic minority people. These, he said, contributed to the victory of the whole nation. Ha Giang provincial Party Committee secretary Vu Ngoc Ky reviewed the 110 years of construction and development of the province and affirmed that the country's northernmost border area named Ha Giang has existed for long time. Mr Ky, who is a member of the Party Central Committee, said over the past century, ethnic minority people of Ha Giang had to fight against foreign invaders while pooling their efforts to overcome poverty and harsh climatic conditions. With self-reliance, bravery and creativity, Ha Giang people have gained achievements and are determined to build a more prosperous and civilised province. After the meeting, marches and processions by armed forces, people from various sectors and war veterans took place. More than 2,000 young people gave an art performance to celebrate 56th anniversary of the August Revolution, the National Day and the 110th founding anniversary of the province. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Six year old donates VND 21 million� to poor children Xuan Mai, a six-year-old girl with singing and dancing talent, donated VND 20 million drawn from proceeds of her own three performances held in Hanoi to disadvantaged children in Hanoi. Earlier, Xuan Mai also granted VND 1 million to underprivileged children in the launching ceremony of a programme named 'Help Us Go to School' held on August 13 by Chinfon Manulife Insurance Company and 'For Young Children' magazine. Xuan Mai is very popular in Ho Chi Minh with her performances and CD, VCD released nationwide. Starting to sing at two years old, Xuan Mai has made albums since she was two and a half. Xuan Mai had her own performance in Ho Chi Minh City at the end of last year and became the first five-year-old girl in Vietnam to have a solo performance. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Seminar on education for disabled children A Vietnam-Japan seminar on disabled children's education was held in Ho Chi Minh City on August 20-21. Over 200 delegates attended who are staff and teachers working in educational centres for disabled children. This is the tenth such seminar held in Vietnam. Vietnamese and Japanese delegates discussed methods and exchanged experiences in teaching disabled children in Vietnam. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ US Postal Service should act according to international law: foreign ministry "We hold that the US Postal Service, a government agency, should act in conformity with international law and the present relations between Vietnam and the United States, and should not be pressured by those who try to deliberately sabotage the currently improved relations between the two countries," said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Phan Thuy Thanh in Hanoi on August 20. Ms Thanh was answering foreign correspondents' question about Vietnam's reaction to the US Postal Service's re-collecting thousands of copies of the pamphlet titled 'A World of Service to Meet Your Needs' whose cover was printed with many countries' flags, including Vietnam's. She said that Vietnam is contacting the US Postal Service to clear up the question. "The 'Red and Golden Star' flag is the national flag of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam," Ms Thanh said. She added that Vietnam, and the US have established diplomatic relations, so any intention to remove Vietnam's 'Red and Golden Star' flag from US official publications relating to Vietnam is at variance with international law and Vietnam-US relations and will cause doubt about the sincerity of US policy of building friendly relations, and mutual understanding and respect with Vietnam. (VNA) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Symposium on hematology and blood transfusion held Almost 300 medical workers from 41 provinces and cities nationwide gathered in Ho Chi Minh City on August 20 for a symposium on hematology and blood transfusion. Also present at the symposium were professors and doctors specialising in hematology from Thailand, Japan, and the United States. Participants in the symposium focused their discussions on methods of ensuring safety when using blood and blood products to treat patients. They also discussed the diagnosis of diseases and the use of the correct blood group when conducting transfusions. The medical experts also discussed successful methods in gene therapy and the transplantation of marrow, peripheral, and cord blood stem cells. They also heard 66 scientific reports on these subjects. The symposium was held by the Vietnam Hematology and Blood Transfusion Association.
