Macedonian Protesters Block Skopje-Blace Rail Line

SKOPJE, Aug 22, 2001 -- (Agence France Presse) A group
of Macedonian demonstrators blocked a railway line
used by NATO late Tuesday in protest at the alliance's
plans to send more soldiers to the troubled Balkan
 country, Macedonian military sources said.

The sources said an unknown number of protesters had
placed objects across the rails of the line near the
border post at Blace, which links it to the capital
 Skopje.

The railway line is an important link between NATO
troops in neighboring Kosovo and one of the alliance's
bases in Macedonia. It is also a major commercial
 line.

The protesters rallied at Blace in response to a call
by the Macedonian world congress, a body grouping
 non-governmental organizations and a committee
representing Macedonians forced from their homes by
 the ethnic Albanian insurgency.

Other similar protests have taken place on the same
 line since August 18.

It came after NATO decided earlier on Tuesday to
deploy some 3,500 more troops in Macedonia if no
alliance member state objected by 1000 GMT on
 Wednesday.

Some Macedonians fear the deployment could lead to a
freeze on territorial positions already seized by the
rebel National Liberation Army. ((c) 2001 Agence
