JUDICIARY HEAD CALLS FOR EXECUTION OF PUNISHMENT IN PUBLIC, IRNA
(STATE NEWS AGENCY), AUGUST 20

TEHRAN - Judiciary Head Ayatollah Mahmud Hashemi-Shahrudi
on Monday stressed combating the immorality in the society.
Speaking in a gathering of the top judicial authorities,
Ayatollah Shahrudi called for execution of the punishments in
public and said the people should enjoy the right to see those
violating the laws and Islamic sanctities to be punished before
their eyes and publicly.

IRANIAN YOUTH WORRIED BY RETURN OF SOCIAL REPRESSION, AGENCE
FRANCE PRESSE, AUGUST 20

    TEHRAN - Tehran's youth, whose alleged "anti-Islamic"
behavior has drawn the wrath of conservatives, are worrying
whether Mohammad Khatami can avoid a revival of repressive social
order.
"We voted Khatami in 1997, and we voted for him again with
many hopes a few months ago..., but this beats all," says 20-
year-old apprentice Mahmoud referring to the police-led campaign
against all signs of "depravity" and "indecency" in society.
The comment made by Mahmoud came as groups of police
entered shops demanding that all "indecent" products be removed
from the shop windows.
Similar operations were carried out in numerous parts of
Tehran, Iran's 10-million strong capital.
On Saturday, shop owners received a warning from police
that they must remove all signs of "indecency," "depravity," and
Western culture from their store windows.
The long list of barred items also includes a ban on men
wearing ties, as they are considered by many conservatives to be
symbols of Western "perversion."
Police also entered restaurants, taking pictures -- later
to be used as "evidence" against owners -- of female customers,
not fully observing the wearing of the Islamic "hejab" or head
and body covering.
Mahtab, a 19-year-old girl walking down Pasdaran Avenue,
another popular commercial center, says she had witnessed a "far
worse scene" on Saturday night when a group of girls, considered
to have been wearing "too much make-up" by the morals police,
were reprimanded.
"It is the return of regulations which we believed to have
forgotten. It is not just a matter of public places," says 31-
year-old Ali, a drama student who stresses that the morals police
can also invade privacy at home.

KHATAMI WARNS OF PEOPLE RESOLVE AGAINST MULLAHS' RULE, AGENCE
FRANCE PRESSE, AUGUST 19

TEHRAN - Mohammad Khatami on Sunday defended his new
government to allies in parliament angered over his cabinet
reshuffle.
"The time of heroes is past...," said Khatami, warning
against a social uprising in case of political failure.
Khatami said he had chosen his cabinet based on
"coordination and cohesion," and cautioned that "if we do not
succeed, our people who have so far been patient ... can refer to
other methods" -- a clear allusion to recent and rising popular
protest movements, notably among workers.
Reformist MPs have fiercely criticized the president,
opining that the line-up was not a cabinet of "reforms."
