Maoists for unity talks

Underground Maoists will assign representatives for unity talks with other
communist parties. Party strongman Comrade Prachanda issued a statement
Friday saying unity amongst communist ranks was essential.

Prachanda also said there was a need for a new communist party. He further
added a call for unity without abandoning the principles of Maoism, Marxism
and Leninism. Maoist calls for unity comes immediately after secret talks
last week in West Bengal with representatives of communist parties in the
parliament.

The main opposition in parliament UML later issued a statement asking the
Maoists to abandon demands for a republic, a constituent assembly and an
interim government. The demands, the UML said, will be retrogressive.

Talks between the government and the Maoists are also yet to materialize as
Deuba's 10 day deadline for negotiations to end an insurgency that has
claimed more than 1,800 lives in nearly six years nears. nepalnews.com be
