Israel to "pay heavy price" for killing - PFLP
Filed at: 03:59 PM

A Palestinian faction has said that Israel would pay a heavy price for the
death of the organisation's leader earlier today. Abu Ali Mustafa, the head
of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, died when two
missiles fired by Israeli helicopter gunships hit his office in the West
Bank town of Ramallah.

A top aide to Palestinian President Yasser Arafat said earlier that Israel
has "crossed all red lines" by carrying out the killing. The Palestinian
Authority said that the Israeli action set the stage for "all-out war".

The PFLP opposes peacemaking with Israel. The group is a faction of the
Palestine Liberation Organisation.

The United Nations Secretary-General accused Israel of exacerbating the
Middle East crisis. Speaking in Austria following the assassination, Kofi
Annan called for international action before violence spread to
neighbouring countries.

The death has reduced hopes of a high level meeting later this week between
Israel and Palestinian leaders to discuss a possible ceasefire.

On Saturday, two gunmen claiming to represent the PFLP infiltrated an
Israeli Army base in the Gaza Strip and shot three Israelis soldiers dead
before they were killed themselves.

In a separate development, Arab leaders have criticised the United States
strongly for failing to do enough to stop the violence in the Middle East.
The Arab League has accused President George W Bush of encouraging Israel
to pursue, what it described as, lethal policies.

Egypt says that the United States government is reluctant to condemn
Israeli attacks on Palestinians. The Egyptian leader, Hosni Mubarak, said
that the United States had the capability to end the violence.

His Foreign Minister, Ahmed Maha Al Sayed, said that the United States
should do more to ease tensions in the region.
