Government Office staff should be vanguard in administrative reform: PM

The staff of the Government Office must be the vanguard in administrative
reform and the fight against bureaucracy, embezzlement and corruption, said
Prime Minister Phan Van Khai in a meeting to mark the 56th traditional day
of the Government Office (August 28).

The prime minister further told the meeting, held in Hanoi on August 28,
that the office staff should continuously improve their political awareness
and professional qualification and carry out their assignment in scientific
ways. 

The Government Office is required to have a contingent of qualified
employees, ethically and professionally, to co-ordinate with pertinent
agencies to fulfill assignments as well as successfully carry out government
resolutions, Mr Khai noted.

After praising the endeavours made by the staff of the office over the past
56 years, Prime Minister Khai pointed out that the Government Office must be
responsible for successfully carrying out tasks and requirements of the
national renovation.

Speaking at the meeting, Minister and Director of the Government Office Doan
Manh Giao said generations of staff of the Government Office have been
tirelessly striving to effectively serve the government and the prime
minister in directing activities of the entire country over the past 56
years. The Government Office has exerted great efforts in aiding the
government to promulgate and implement the Working Regulation of the
government, taking part in drafting government and prime ministerial
reports, proposing and organising the implementation of administrative
reform solutions. 

He went on to say that the Government Office is a leading agency in applying
information technology advances in handling daily assignments. The office
has recently promoted the publication of official gazettes and raised the
efficiency of administrative, management and logistic activities to provide
better services to government leaders.

President Tran Duc Luong, Prime Minister Phan Van Khai, former advisor to
the Party Central Committee Do Muoi and President of the Vietnam Fatherland
Front Central Committee Pham The Duyet were prominent among those present at
the meeting. 

Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Van
An, former Party General Secretary Le Kha Phieu and former Prime Minister Vo
Van Kiet sent flowers to the meeting. (VNA)

Deputy PM meets Lao government's delegationDeputy Prime Minister Pham Gia
Khiem has expressed his hope for the Vietnamese and Lao Governments' Special
Working Groups' continued co-operation in searching for the remains of
Vietnamese soldiers who died while serving in Laos.

Deputy Prime Minister Khiem was speaking in Hanoi on August 28, to Deputy
Defence Minister Lieutenant General Khamphouang Chanthaphomma, who is
leading a delegation from the Lao Government's Special Working Group for a
working visit to Vietnam from August 27-31.

He thanked the Lao Party, State, and people for their assistance in the
search for the remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who died
in Laos. 

He spoke highly of the results of co-operation between the Vietnamese and
Lao Governments' Special Working Groups over the past six years.

Lieutenant General Khamphouang, who is also a member of the Lao People's
Revolutionary Party (LPRP) Central Committee, and head of the General
Politics Department, informed his host of the results of talks between the
two working groups.

He expressed his deep gratitude on behalf of the Lao Party, State, and
people for the sacrifices made by Vietnamese soldiers and experts in Laos.

Earlier, delegations of the two Working Groups reviewed their co-operation
over the recent past and agreed upon measures to be taken in future searches
for the remains of those Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who
perished in Laos. The Vietnamese delegation was led by Deputy Defence
Minister Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Rinh.

The Lao delegation was also received by Defence Minister Senior Lieutenant

Books on President Ho Chi Minh published

The National Politics Publishing House has published books on beloved
President Ho Chi Minh including 'Stories about Uncle Ho - Road Sections of
Long War of Resistance,' 'Uncle Ho in Tan Trao' and 'President Ho Chi Minh
with the National Assembly and People's Council.'

This is to mark the 56th anniversaries of the August Revolution and National
Day, September 2. 

The 'Stories about Uncle Ho - Road Sections of Long War of Resistance' book,
told by Mr Vu Ky (secretary of Uncle Ho) and written by Huyen Tim and Tu
Nen, is about life, career and revolutionary activities of Uncle Ho from
August 1945 to 1948.

The stories are arranged according to the time such as August 1945 in Hanoi;
Working days after the Declaration of Independence; Spring in 1946; 1946 -
the year of precarious situation; First days of long war of resistance;
First Lunar New Year holidays of the resistance war; Days to mark the
founding anniversary of the Communist Party of Vietnam; Itinerary from
One-Roof Pagoda to Viet Bac; Continuing road sections of the long resistance
war; and Aspirations of Uncle Ho when the nation is reunified.

The 'Uncle Ho in Tan Trao' book includes reminiscences on Uncle Ho by
leaders, generals, cadres and people who lived and worked beside Uncle Ho
during the days President Ho Chi Minh and the Party Central Committee made
preparations for the general uprising.

Cultural exchange marks National Day

The Centre for Traditional Education and History and the Vietnam Television
jointly organised a journey called 'Return to the Origin with Uncle Ho' and
traditional cultural exchange, 'Songs from the Country's Origin'.

More than 200 village elderly people and representatives of revolutionary
families from ten provinces joined the journey.

They planned to pay tribute to late President Ho Chi Minh at his Mausoleum,
visit several agencies, historical and revolutionary relics in Hanoi and Ha
Tay northern province and join the traditional cultural exchange in Hanoi
Youth Cultural and Sports Palace from August 28 to September 1.

This is to mark the 56th anniversary of the August Revolution and National
Day (September 2).

Australian naval ships visit HCM CityThree ships of the Australian Royal
Navy on August 28 concluded their four-day visit to Ho Chi Minh City.

The 563 captains and crewmen from the Warramunga, Canberra, and Manoora
ships paid floral tributes to President Ho Chi Minh at his monument, paid
courtesy calls to the municipal People's Committee and the Command of the
Seventh Military Zone, and met with senior officers from the Vietnam
People's Army Naval Command.

They also visited some cultural and historic sites in Ho Chi Minh City and
neighbouring provinces, and took part in friendly sports matches with troops
from Vietnam's border patrol. (VNA)

Sweden helps strengthen law training

An agreement between Vietnam and Sweden on strengthening the capacity of law
training in Vietnam in the 2001-2004 period was signed in Hanoi on August
28. 

Signatories were Deputy Minister of Justice Ha Hung Cuong and Mr Per
Lundell, counsellor of Co-operation Development of the Swedish Embassy in
Hanoi. 

Under the project, the Hanoi Law College, the Ho Chi Minh City Law College
and the Law Faculty of the Lund University of Sweden will effectively
implement the training programme and teaching method at the bachelor, master
and doctor degree levels, improve professional knowledge for lecturers,
enhance the information system and expand international co-operation.

Seminar on opportunities for business co-operationA seminar on commercial
policy and markets of Vietnam and other countries in the region '
Opportunities for Co-operation among co-operatives' was held in Hanoi on
August 28. 

The seminar, organised by the Vietnam Co-operatives Alliance and the
International Co-operatives Alliance, was attended by representatives of
co-operative organisations from 41 of the 61 provinces and cities across
Vietnam. The seminar was also attended by representatives from China, Iran,
Australia, Thailand, and the Philippines.

Speakers informed the participants of the latest information on Vietnam's
commercial policy as well as the status of the country's domestic and
regional markets. They proposed measures to promote commercial and
investment co-operation and create opportunities for Vietnamese
co-operatives to co-operate with co-operative organisations of regional
countries. 

The seminar helped the Vietnam Co-operatives Alliance promote information
exchange with co-operative organisations and small and medium-sized
enterprises in other countries, enabling Vietnamese co-operatives and
businesses to join the regional co-operatives' system for selling products.
