CUBAN WITNESS AT MIAMI 5 TRIAL APPEARS ON TV ROUNDTABLE

HAVANA, Aug 29 (AIN)--In another presentation of the series "Inside the
Belly of the Beast," Tuesday night's TV roundtable broadcast surprised
viewers and listeners when the only Cuban witness that took the stand during
the manipulated trial against five imprisoned Cubans patriots in their Miami
trial participated in the program.

"A Cuban from Cuba, and in a live presentation," was the way that Rene
Gonzalez described the participation in the trial as a witness of Lt.
Colonel Roberto Hernandez Caballero, an officer of the Cuban State Security
who, despite the opposition and manipulations of the State Prosecutor to
limit his testimony, was able to offer it on March 29 of this year.

Hernandez Caballero is 37 years old, and has dedicated 17 years to
investigate terrorist and other violent actions against Cuba. He is a
lawyer, and postgraduate training in criminology, international law,
corporate law and terrorism; these and other credential were provided by
Rene Gonzalez about the Lieutenant Colonel.

His contribution was decisive, both in a previous stage of the work, when
the attorneys of Gerardo Ramon, Antonio, Fernando and Rene were designing
the strategy for their defense, as well as during the taped declaration
taken in Havana before several witnesses, and during the actual trial
procedures in court.

Hernandez Caballero said that his statement was almost a battle, because
from beginning to end, the State Prosecutor tried to place limits to his
statement, attempting to stop him from speaking the truth about terrorist
activities against Cuba from US territory and with the tolerance, if not the
complicity, of the authorities of the United States.

He said that he was only allowed to describe the cases of the three
explosive devices that could be defused in time.

"They wanted to minimize the situation, show as isolated incidents what was
really a full-scale development of terrorist activities during the 1990s,"
he said.

Nevertheless, he declared that his testimony during the trial, and the
information provided previously, helped the defense attorneys to sustain and
support what in the legal terms is known as "State of Necessity," that is,
establishing Cuba's to defend itself, which justified the presence and
activities of the five Cubans in Miami.

Hernandez Caballero will be participating again on Wednesday's broadcast.

During last evening's program the members of the panel provided relevant
information about the activities of the Partido Unidad Nacional Democratica,
a very active and aggresive terrorist group since its founding in 1989 until
its self-liquidation in 1997.

Manuel Hevia, the Director of the Center for Historical Research of the
Cuban State Security, listed the large number of terrorist activities of
that group, with Sergio Gonzalez Rosquete as its main figure. Hevia also
provided information about repeated attempts to infiltrate Cuba, one of
which caused the death of a Cuban citizen.

The roundtable panel unmasked the terrorist activities that for more than 40
years have been organized against Cuba in the United States of America.
Based on this history, they said, the total innocence of the five political
prisoners of the empire is self-evident, as they have caused no harm to
anyone and have sacrificed their own lives to save the lives of their
people.
