32nd Turkish hunger striker dies
======================
 online.ie 31 Aug 2001

The Turkish hunger strike has claimed its 32nd victim after
the sister
of a man being held in one of the country's notorious
prisons starved to
death today.

38-year-old Hulya Simsek, whose incarcerated brother is also
on hunger
strike, died in a house in Istanbul after 285 days without
food.

She had been living in the house with a number of other
hunger strikers
who are protesting against the Turkish authorities
oppression of
political prisoners.

So far, 25 prisoners and seven of their relatives have died
in the
strike, which began 11 months ago when the Government forced
prisoners
out of dormitories and into small cells.

The prisoners have claimed that the small cells make it
easier for
prison officials to torture them on a daily basis.

Nearly 200 prisoners, all members of outlawed left-wing
militant groups,
are participating in the hunger strike.
