Subject: [R-G] Mexico: pre-WTO protest

Reuters. 31 August 2001. Women Police Keep Mexican Trade Protest
Peaceful.

MEXICO CITY -- Women riot police on Friday confronted only peaceful
demonstrators, 15 of them on horseback, as ministers from 17 rich and
poor nations met in Mexico ahead of November world trade talks.

About 100 policewomen were deployed to discourage protesters from
rioting in Mexico City's ritzy Polanco neighborhood, where talks were
being held in the Hotel Intercontinental.

"We're using women because we need to tone down our show of strength,''
said Gabriel Mendoza Jimenez, in charge of the police cordon that closed
streets around the talks. He said 200 riot police were on hand.

About 60 demonstrators, carrying placards with such slogans as "The
solution is revolution," gathered to demonstrate against the meetings
and globalization overall.

Fifteen protesters from a Mexican bank-debtors group called El Barzon
rode in front of the police cordon on horses dressed in traditional
Mexican "charro," or cowboy, tackle.

Protesters were coordinated by the Mexican Network for Action Against
Free Trade, an anti-free trade umbrella group.

The informal talks in Mexico City are a prelude to meetings of the World
Trade Organization in Doha, Qatar, Nov. 9-13.

Trade ministers from the 17 developed and developing nations and the
European Union hope to reach some agreements on the agenda at Doha.

Protesters complained the two days of meetings were designed to reach
preliminary agreements that would later be pushed through.
