Union leader assassinated in northeastern Colombia
BOGOTA - Colombian union leader Rafael Pineda Gomez, who headed the
National Bank Employees Union (UNEB), was killed Saturday night in a rural
area in northeastern Colombia, union officials in Bogota said. Several
unknown assailants shot Pineda to death in Puente Nacional, some 150
kilometers (93 miles) from the capital, where he also served on the town
council.
UNEB spokespersons told reporters that Pineda Gomez's murder took place in
an outlying part of the township where he had gone to hold meetings with
the community.
Pineda was the regional president of the Colombian Bank Workers union,
according to spokespersons.
More than 50 union members and officers have been killed so far this year
in Colombia, most of them members of the Unitary Workers Union (CUT),
which is the country's main labor organization and the one with which UNEB
is affiliated.
