CUBA REJECTS TERRORISM IN THE US:
September 11, 2001
Cuba rejects acts of terrorism in the United States and offers
condolences to the victims

THE Cuban government has totally rejected the acts of
terrorism reported today, Tuesday, in the United States and
has offered its condolences to the people and authorities of
that country for loss of life.

Foreign Minister Felipe Prez Roque informed the press that
Cuba's historical position is to "totally condemn and reject
terrorism wherever it comes from and against whoever it is
perpetrated."

The Cuban minister made his statement in Havana's Jos Mart
International Airport a few hours after the attacks on the
World Trade Center twin towers in New York, plus the Pentagon
and State Department in Washington, which all occurred within
minutes of one another.

"Our people have had to suffer 40 years of acts of terrorism,
so we know the consequences of this type of action,"
emphasized Prez Roque.

The Cuban minister of foreign affairs stated that the island
has notified regional air traffic control authorities that the
island is willing to offer facilities in Cuban airports for
aircraft in mid-flight, due to the present situation in U.S.
airspace.

"Our reaction really is one of a feeling of total rejection of
this action," reiterated Prez Roque.

Asked about those acts of terrorism being attributed to
Palestinian terrorists, the foreign minister indicated that
Yasser Arafat, president of the Palestinian National
Authority, was one of the first to expressly condemn what
occurred today.

Regarding a notion that Cuba was involved, he confirmed:
"I do not believe it is necessary to refer to this, and I trust
that such a barbaric idea would not occur to anybody."

After the news became known on the island normal television
transmissions were interrupted and full and detailed
information was offered on the incident, described here
as "a national tragedy for the United States." (PL)

THE NEW YORK TIMES: CUBA
The government expressed its "pain" and "solidarity"
with its longtime adversary and offered air and medical
facilities to help. State television took the unusual step
of interrupting normal programming to announce the
United States "national tragedy" and show CNN's
Spanish-language channel live.

THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE:
Of all the world's nations, only Iraq cheered the
terrorism as "the operation of the century." Others
that have had harsh relations with America in the
past--Russia, China, Cuba, Libya, Yasser Arafat,
even the Afghanistan Taliban leaders who have
been harboring exiled Saudi terrorist Osama bin
Laden--reacted with revulsion.

HENRY KISSINGER
"We do not yet know whether Osama bin Laden
did this, although it appears to have the earmarks
of a bin Laden-type operation. But any government
that shelters groups capable of this kind of attack,
whether or not they can be shown to have been
involved in this attack, must pay an exorbitant price.

HOLLYWOOD REACTS WITH CAUTION
As the media focused its attentions on yesterday's
horrific events, the absence of commercials was one
aspect which was quite striking. Cubans, who are
privileged to not have commercials on their television
wouldn't be able to appreciate this simple phenomenon.

INTERNATIONAL ACTION CENTER
While at this moment thousands of families are in mourning for
the death and injuries of loved ones, the Bush administration
is taking advantage of the tragic human toll to strengthen the
forces of repression while intensifying the Pentagon's war
drive, especially in the Middle East.

The only way to respond to today's events is to extend
solidarity to the families and friends of those who perished
or who were injured at the World Trade Center and the
Pentagon; build global solidarity with people around the world
struggling against war, poverty and exploitation; and deepen
the movement to protest new Pentagon aggression. TEXT:

SOCIALIST WORKERS PARTY
Whoever may have carried out the September 11 operations, the
destruction of the two World Trade Center towers, and the air
attack on the Pentagon -- with the resulting deaths and
injuries of thousands of men, women, and children -- these
actions have nothing to do with the fight against capitalist
exploitation and imperialist oppression. Revolutionists and
other class-conscious workers, farmers, and youth the world
over reject the use of such methods.

We must oppose U.S. military intervention anywhere in the
world. We must oppose efforts by Washington to escalate an
assault on the political rights of working people and the
organizations of our class and its oppressed and exploited
allies. TEXT:

US ABOUT TO NORMALIZE TRADE WITH VIETNAM
HANOI, Vietnam (AP) - The U.S. Senate is likely to
consider an agreement to grant normal trading status
to Vietnam soon, ``hopefully within a matter of days,''
a U.S. trade official said Wednesday.

The bilateral trade agreement, which is expected to
sharply boost commerce and contacts between the
two former enemies, has already been passed by
the House of Representatives.
