MORE ON LABOR AND THE CURRENT HYSTERIA
03) New York City Labor Statement on September 11
27 Sep 01
September 11 has brought indescribable suffering to New York City's working
people. We have lost friends, family members and coworkers of all colors,
nationalities and religions -- a thousand of them union members. An
estimated one hundred thousand New Yorkers will lose their jobs.
We condemn this crime against humanity and mourn those who perished. We
are proud of the rescuers and the outpouring of labor support for victims'
families. We want justice for the dead and safety for the living.
And we believe that George Bush's war is not the answer.
No one should suffer what we experienced on September 11. Yet war will
inevitably harm countless innocent civilians, strengthen American alliances
with brutal dictatorships and deepen global poverty -- just as the United
States and its allies have already inflicted widespread suffering on
innocent people in such places as Iraq, Sudan, Israel and the Occupied
Territories, the former Yugoslavia and Latin America.
War will also take a heavy toll on us. For Americans in uniform -- the
overwhelming number of whom are workers and people of color -- it will be
another Vietnam. It will generate further terror in this country against
Arabs, Muslims, South Asians, people of color and immigrants, and erode our
civil liberties. It will redirect billions to the military and corporate
executives, while draining such essential domestic programs as education,
health care and the social security trust.
War will play into the hands of religious fanatics -- from Osama bin Laden
to Jerry Falwell -- and provoke further terrorism in major urban centers
like New York.
* * *
Therefore, the undersigned New York City metro-area trade unionists believe
a just and effective response to September 11 demands:
** NO WAR. It is wrong to punish any nation or people for the crimes of
individuals -- peace requires global social and economic justice.
** JUSTICE, NOT VENGEANCE. An independent international tribunal to
impartially investigate, apprehend and try those responsible for the
September 11 attack.
** OPPOSITION TO RACISM -- DEFENSE OF CIVIL LIBERTIES. Stop terror, racial
profiling and legal restrictions against people of color and immigrants,
and defend democratic rights.
** AID FOR THE NEEDY, NOT THE GREEDY. Government aid for the victims'
families and displaced workers -- not the wealthy. Rebuild New York City
with union labor, union pay, and with special concern for new threats to
worker health and safety.

04) Janitors from World Trade Center, Area Buildings Face Economic
Uncertainty: $1 Million SEIU Sept. 11 Relief Fund Established
Service Employees International Union (SEIU)
21 Sep 01
NEW YORK -- Thousands of janitors, hotel workers and others are expected to
permanently lose their jobs or be displaced for a long period of time in
the aftermath of the terrorist attack that has destroyed the World Trade
Center and other buildings in lower Manhattan. The Service Employees
International Union (SEIU) September 11th Relief Fund has been set up for
tax-deductible contributions to provide assistance to workers and their
families affected by the tragedy. More than $600,000 of the $1 million has
already been raised, with more coming in every day.
Five-year-old David Long of Davenport, Iowa sent in a crayon drawing with a
note about how sad he is, plus he donated his entire piggy bank of $120.22.
Many low-wage workers are sending in what they can, and notes and letters
of support arrive from around the world every day.
More than 1,000 SEIU members worked as security, cleaners and tour guides
at the World Trade Center. It is known that two window washers who were
working on the 102nd floor at the time of the attack have been lost.
The whereabouts of 24 workers, including janitors, day porters and security
guards and 40 public employees is not yet known.
Thousands of SEIU members who work in the health care institutions in New
York responded to the call for help and have been working around the clock
providing emergency medical care to the victims. Two Emergency Medical
Technicians (EMTs) are unaccounted for, and one is confirmed missing.
To speak with SEIU members personally affected by the tragedy, contact Dan
O'Sullivan at 202-898-3437.

05) New York City Labor Unions at the Center of Efforts to Help Rebuild
City's Economy
Teamsters Online
21 Sep 01
In addition to making an enormous contribution in the rescue and recovery
mission following last Tuesday's terrorist attacks on the World Trade
Center and Pentagon, the New York City labor movement is also coming
together in efforts to aid the thousands of working people who have lost
jobs in the wake of this disaster. At an Executive Board meeting on
Septemeber 20, the New York City Central Labor Council (NYCCLC) began
addressing short- and long-term plans to assist New York City's working
people who have been hurt and displaced by the World Trade Center disaster.
Union leaders at the meeting included Central Labor Council President Brian
McLaughlin, NYS AFL-CIO President Denis Hughes, Building and Construction
Trades Council President Ed Malloy, EMT Local 2507/DC 37/AFSCME President
Patrick Bahnken, CWA Downstate Area Director Peter Maher, UFT President
Randi Weingarten, NY Hotel & Motel Trades Council President Peter Ward,
SEIU Local 32BJ President Mike Fishman, and others.
New York Governor George Pataki also attended the meeting and commended the
city's labor unions. "What your members have done is outstanding," he said.
Among the many unions currently involved in the recovery effort is
Teamsters Local 282, whose members normally deliver concrete to
construction sites around the city. More than 400 members of Local 282 are
driving 200 trucks in 12-hour rotating shifts to haul away debris from the
disaster site.
Laborers locals of the Mason Tenders District Council (MTDC) are also
involved in the recovery. Members of Laborers Local 78, which specializes
in asbestos and hazardous waste removal, have been on the job, along with
members from Laborers Locals 79, 66, and 108.
The Iron Workers union has set up three teams of highly skilled
construction workers drawn from New York, all of New England, the mid-
Atlantic, Virginia, Ohio, the District of Columbia and West Virginia. More
than 1,000 Iron Workers have volunteered in this effort.
District Council 37, AFSCME, represents over 3,000 EMTs who have been
working tirelessly to save victims of the tragedy, aided by EMTs from other
AFSCME affiliates.
And all of the city's firefighters, police and other emergency personnel
are an ongoing part of the city's recovery efforts. The total number of
union members lost in the destruction of the World Trade Center has not
been officially counted to date. But the number is expected to be in the
thousands.
Workers Facing Layoffs
One of the immediate issues that unions in the city will be facing in the
weeks ahead is the growing number of laid-off workers.
"We're finding limo drivers who have lost 70% of their fares, 810 displaced
hotel workers, with more layoffs expected, 2,000 displaced building
services workers, 1,000 displaced bridge painters, in addition to layoffs
in the airline, manufacturing and entertainment industries," said NYCCLC
President Brian McLaughlin. "The economic impact on working families
throughout the city will continue to reverberate for some time, and as a
labor movement we are committed to helping all working people through this
devastating time."
Among the initial efforts developed by the New York City Central Labor
Council are:
The Emergency Employment Clearinghouse Program (a labor-business
partnership between the Consortium for Worker Education, the NYC
Partnership and the NYC Central Labor Council) is arranging temporary jobs
and welcomes calls from both employers with jobs to offer and workers in
need. The Employer Hotline number is: 212-558-2250; the Worker Hotline
number is: 212-558-2261.
The Labor Support Center to aid working families in this time of crisis. If
someone needs information on unemployment, Social Security, or other aid
questions, including mental-health counseling referrals, they can call
800-506-0036.
The Disaster Relief Fund is accepting contributions, also at 800-506-0036.
Volunteers who wish to help can call the hotline at 800-506-0036.
And five New York City pension funds--police, fire, teachers, non-teaching
Board of Education workers and the city employee retirement fund, which
includes Teamsters, transit workers and District Council 37 members--have
announced plans to invest $800 million into the stock market to help
strengthen the economy.
"This is one small way that the members, through the contributions into
their pension fund ... can feel that they are part and parcel of lending a
helping hand," said Nick Mancuso, the chief negotiator for the Teamsters
Local 237 (New York Daily News, 09/21/01).

... Now, however, the chickens are coming home to roost. This afternoon a
truly wonderful thing has happened: the oppressed of the earth have turned
around and have shown that they do not have to be nature's eternal victims.
They have shown that the poor, the downtrodden, and the powerless can
strike back at the very heart of the dark forces that are oppressing them.
This time it was not Palestinian children who cowered in fear as death came
from the skies -- this time it was the very fat bankers and financiers who
sustain the terroristic regime of Sharon. This time it was those very
military men who mastermind the attacks on the women and children of Iraq.
They thought they were so safe as they planned death and destruction from
their comfortable offices in the Pentagon, and as they did their dirty
deals in the World Trade Center. Now they have been given a bloody nose
that they will never forget.
Today was a glorious day. May there be many others like it.
