Combined reports. US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has said he doesn't believe the Taleban's statement that Osama Bin Laden is under their control. The Taleban ambassador to Pakistan, Mullah Abdul Salam Zaeef, announced on Sunday that "Osama is in Afghanistan, but he is at an unknown place for his safety and security." Mr Zaeef said Washington could break the stalemate if it were willing to provide proof of Bin Laden's role. Mr Rumsfeld said that there was no reason to believe anything the Taleban had to say, adding that it was "self-evident" that they would pay the price if they did not hand over Bin Laden. Meanwhile, United States Attorney General John Ashcroft has warned American citizens of the likelihood of "further terrorist activity" in response to prospective US military action against Afghanistan. Speaking on the American CBS network's Face The Nation, Mr Ashcroft said that although many suspected terrorists had already been detained, there were still others who may be in the country "who would have plans." "As we as a nation respond to what has happened to us, the risks [of further terrorism] may in fact go up," he said in a separate interview with CNN's Late Edition. Mr Ashcroft said that the "very serious threat" of further strikes might escalate once the US military launches such a counter-offensive.
