Subject: [R-G] Coca-Cola bombing, anti-WWIII action

AFP. 21 October 2001. Indian Maoists bomb Coca Cola factory to protest
US raids in Afghanistan.

NEW DELHI -- Maoist rebels on Sunday bombed a Coca Cola factory in the
southern Indian state of Andra Pradesh in retaliation for US military
action against Afghanistan.

The American soft drink company said the attackers overpowered the
security guards at the gates of the factory in the coastal state's
Guntur district and then exploded four landmines.

"The attackers bombed the boiler plant, the vehicle parking area and
administrative building. Another bomb did not explode," the company said
in a statement.

Three Coca Cola company cars were also destroyed by the blasts. Although
damage was extensive, the factory's production unit was not destroyed,
it said.

No one was injured in the raid which took place early Sunday by around
12 heavily-armed members of the People's War Group (PWG).

A local police official said the attackers came in a jeep and a
motorcyle and escaped after causing heavy damage to parts of the
factory.

Police said the rebels left a note at the scene warning of further
attacks against other Western companies in the coastal state.

"We have found a note in Telugu language which said the attacks were
against American imperialism and the US attacks in Afghanistan," Guntur
police chief, Vinay Ranjan Ray, told the Aaj Tak private television
network.

The People's War Group are locked in an armed conflict against the
Andhra Pradesh government to press for sweeping land reforms in favour
of poor farmers. Sunday's attack is their first strike against Western
firms in the region.
