More Unions Join Protest, Serbian Minister Warns
Against March

BELGRADE, Oct 23, 2001 -- (dpa) Leaders of three
Serbian unions have called a protest in central
Belgrade for Tuesday, stepping up their opposition to
a reformist labor bill, but drawing a warning from the
Serbian Interior Minister Dusan Mihajlovic.

The Nezavisnost (Independence) association and a
health workers' union will join the Asscociation of
Serbian Unions (SSS) week-long strike and street
protests.

Union leaders said that they would take the
demonstrators for a protest march to the Serbian
parliament building Tuesday, but Mihajlovic warned
them that gatherings in front of the legislature are
disallowed while it is in session.

"I would like to remind organizers of the protest that
the ban has been brought to their attention," he said
at a press conference.

Chief of Independence, Branislav Canak, said that the
leaders will "try to honor" the law.

"But if many people come and express the wish to go
for the walk to the parliament, we will go," he told
the YU-Infot television.

The parliament on Monday opened a regular session,
with the labor bill among items on its agenda.
