Subject: [Peoples War] Republican Sinn Fein: Statement

"A humiliating surrender makes no fundamental change"
=====================================
Statement by Ruairí Ó Brádaigh, President, Republican Sinn Féin
October 24, 2001

The long-expected action of the Provisional Movement in destroying arms
makes no fundamental change in the situation in the Six Counties. Of course,
it helps to cement British rule in Ireland by reducing the potential for
resistance to British occupation forces.

The basic question of the English government ruling part of Ireland remains
and Irish history teaches us that as long this is so there will be
resistance to it.

Further there are those who took part in the struggle down the decades who
are not now politically affiliated and who maintain that the arms are not
the Provos' to destroy. They contend that the arms were given to the
Provisionals to achieve Irish national independence and since they now
actively support British rule, such armament no longer belongs to them.

Already (this morning) a member of the new colonial "police authority" has
called publicly for the Provos to be admitted to the ranks of the renamed
RUC.

This confirms what Republicans have always maintained. The Provos will go
full circle and join the British forces which they once opposed. Their task
will then be to repress their former comrades who continue the struggle, as
did the Broy Harriers in the 26 Counties.

Yesterday's (Tuesday) action is indeed a humiliating surrender to pressure
by the British and the Unionists. Like every other political move by the
Provos since 1986 it was brought about through the inevitability of
gradualness.

As the counter-revolution proceeds and the Provos are fully absorbed into
the British system in Ireland we may expect further moves of a similar
nature on the political and military aspects of affairs.

Republican Sinn Féin's understanding and sympathy goes out to those families
who suffered such sacrifices since 1969 only to witness the Provos settle
for less than was on offer in the Sunningdale Agreement of 30 years ago.
