Date: October 24, 2001 Statement No: 218 A murder committed by Hasan �zdemir and Sefik Kul YUNUS G�ZEL, WAS MURDERED UNDER TORTURE BY ISTANBUL POLICE! It was announced on October 23 that our comrade Yunus G�zel "committed suicide" and died in a cell at the Police HQ in Istanbul. According to the police, our comrade, whose height is 1.80 metre, dismantled the bed in his cell, turned it into a vertical position and hung himself with a sheet! With this statement it is certain that they killed him under torture and are covering it up by lying. How can decent people who can use their own logic believe such an explanation? This statement is a statement of murder. Using such a vulgar and reckless lie only proves admittance. This country is a country of murders. This regime is a regime of murders. On October 23 a new murder was committed in Istanbul Police HQ. A revolutionary called Yunus G�zel was murdered. This state is a torture state. The fact that this regime carries out torture has been certified tens of thousands of times for decades. The Istanbul Police have added another murder by torture to their bloody logbook. "He/she fell down the stairs� he/she hit his/her head off the wall� he/she hung himself/herself in a police cell� he/she jumped out of the window". All murders in torture places that are officially called "Police HQ" or police stations are explained by one of these four lies. These are "official lies". They even do not bother to create more sophisticated lies. This is because the follow up to the murder is also known: kill, tell a live to cover it up, launch a show investigation and close the file. It is already known what the decision of the court will be. The summary of the court decision will be on the basis of "not to jeopardise the work of the police. " The same police will carry on with the practices of torture and executions. The Istanbul Police Chief Hasan �zdemir and his deputy responsible for the anti-terror branch Sefik Kul have been assigned to these positions by torturing and executing people. They have been promoted due to their ability to carry out torture and executions. Behind the democracy game there exists torture, extra-judicial executions, massacres and disappearances. Only a week ago "great" amendments were done to the constitution. Again in the name of democratisation "great" developments have been achieved. During the same time the Istanbul police and each police and gendarme team in the country were carrying out torture. Have a look at the game! The state minister "responsible for Human Rights" Nejat Arseven, organised "seminars on Human Rights education" on October 22, in Diyarbakir. He said there that " torture is never a state policy, the source of human rights violations are the inability of the officers, lacking knowledge or certain customary habits". And the next day, October 23, another revolutionary is murdered. Each "success" in both Ozdemir and Kul's portfolio is another revolutionary's blood. The Hasan �zdemir-Sefik Kul duo had Ismail Karaman murdered on July 6 in the street. Nobody questioned them on this issue. On the contrary, it is certain that their superiors, the government and the General Staff paid them tribute. It is certain that the murders of Ismail Karaman and Yunus G�zel have been put in their portfolio as "successes". In order to show bigger "successes" lately they have announced that almost everyone they have detained in custody are suicide bombers. When they add the "external forces" fairytale to the scenario by announcing that "these bombers are trained in Greece and Syria" everything is then completed. It is nothing but a lie that our comrade, Yunus G�zel has been preparing to carry out an action of sacrifice. Neither had he been appointed with such a duty, nor had such an action been planned. Each detainee is a "suicide bomber"! "He was waiting for a detonator"! The torturers and murderers, the police, need "great successes" because they could not stop the actions of our fighters. One lie follows another. �Torture, executions and massacres on the basis of lies. Murder, torture, organised plots and detention this is how the state administers. This is how the state is maintaining its "security". It is always the revolutionaries who are first to be targeted by this tyranny. It is always those who are struggling against the state. Especially the last 30 years of the Republic of Turkey's history, which is the history of massacres. We are asking; will this murder be justified? Our comrade Yunus G�zel, like many other hundreds of comrades, was clearly and cowardly murdered under torture. And everyone knows that torturers and murderers will not be punished by this regime. This regime is so pro-torture that when its own MP Sema Piskinsut revealed the existence of torture, she had faced prosecution. And Mehmet Agar, the most famous torturer in Turkey is appointed as a minister. We are asking to everyone; will this clear and reckless murder be left unpunished? Will the people be left without justice? Our answer for this question is, NO! As long as tyranny exists and torture, executions and disappearances continue the people's violence, armed struggle and actions of sacrifice, will continue. Those who do not condemn the murder of Yunus G�zel and those who do not struggle for the punishment of murderers will have no right to criticise or complain, when the people demand a reckoning tomorrow! Yunus G�ZEL: "I will strengthen the colour of our flag which is obtained from the blood of our martyrs" Comrade Yunus G�zel was born on February 18, 1969 in Antakya-Harbiye. He was of Arab nationality. �He was the son of a family whose life was full of exploitation by feudal landlords. He began to work in the fields when he was a tiny boy. And since then he witnessed injustices. When he was in high school he developed sympathy towards revolutionaries. In 1987 he started his higher education in the Dentistry Faculty of Diyarbakir Dicle University. His choice became clear there. He became a Devrimci Sol cadre. He was assigned to the responsibility of High School Revolutionary Youth. Later he was involved in the Diyarbakir committee of Revolutionary Left. Except for his initial period he was clandestine during his entire life as a revolutionary. He said, "by becoming a doctor I will change nothing" and left his studies in his last year. In later years he was assigned to the Hatay and Adana regions and worked on militia issues. During these years he was in everywhere when he needed and never complained about the hard work. Recently, he was a commander of one of our Armed Propaganda Units in Istanbul. The martyrdom of his comrades during the Death Fast and the increasing poverty of our people strengthen his hatred of the enemy and he wished to strike against them. This is what he was saying in his recent letters to our movement: "we are living through a very painful period. Everyday they are ripping pieces from our hearts. While the regime of plundering and thieving is pushing our people into further poverty, a basic demonstration for liberties is drawn into a bloodbath. Fascism, with its bloodiest face, launched an undeclared war against our people. They are aiming to surrender revolutionaries in F type cell prisons. With this way they are further aiming to surrender the entire people". �In such a period the people's violence and people's armed struggle should be developed. This was the only target in his mind. Of course in such a period he might have fallen martyred, been murdered under torture or made disappeared. He knew what this regime was about. But he also had the determination to welcome death like his comrades who are on death fast. The lines from his letter continue "It is a great honour to become a martyr during such a period when the hearts of our people, our mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters are on fire" He achieved this honour by resisting under torture. He was a fighter. He fell martyr in one of the battlegrounds.
