The incidents throw into question Israel's planned withdrawal from the West Bank towns of Bethlehem and Beit Jalla. Israeli officials said the attacks could not be ignored and would be a factor in deciding whether forces would withdraw Two Palestinian gunmen driving through Hadera, north of Tel Aviv, shot and killed four Israelis waiting at a bus stop. Some 28 were left injured, three of them seriously. Earlier, gunmen shot and killed an Israeli soldier in a drive-by shooting in Israel near the border with the West Bank. An aide to Ariel Sharon, Raanan Gissin, said: "We want to pull back our forces but you can't ignore the fact that there were attacks against our citizens and we have to take all the necessary measures and means to protect our citizens." Plainclothes police detectives shot and killed one gunman who had got out of the car, which was involved in the drive-by shooting, and another Palestinian who remained inside, according to a witness. The Palestinian Islamic Jihad group has claimed responsibility for the attack in a videotaped message. Ariel Sharon has met with Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and Defence Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer to decide whether to proceed with the planned pullback from Bethlehem and Beit Jalla.
