Bomb on bus explodes outside Belfast police station - Ananova
===========================================

An investigation is under way after a bomb exploded outside a west Belfast
police station as army experts were trying to defuse it.

The device, containing an estimated five kilos of explosives, went off on a
bus abandoned at the gates of the Woodbourne base, said a police
spokeswoman.

There were no injuries reported and damage was restricted to the gates of
the police station and the bus.

The Belfast Citybus had been hijacked earlier by two armed and masked men
who ordered the sole passenger off, placed the device on board and ordered
the driver to drive to the police station.

He did as ordered and raised the alarm. A full scale security alert
immediately swung into operation.

An army bomb disposal team carried out a number of controlled explosions on
the device in a bid to defuse it but during the operation it exploded.

Condemning the attack Superintendent Maggie Hunter branded it a "reckless
terrorist act in which people could have died or been injured."

She said it not only placed the bus driver in grave danger, but others on
the route and living in homes near the police station.

She said the device measured three feet by four inches and contained about 5
kilos of explosives.

A number of homes around the police station were evacuated for several hours
during the security alert and a local community hall was opened up to give
evacuees shelter.
