Colombia's ELN guerrillas accuse army of "assassinating" Briton. BOGOTA -- Colombia's second-largest antigovernment rebel group, the Marxist National Liberation Army (ELN), on Wednesday accused the country's army of "assassinating" a British national during army-rebel clashes. Britain's Foreign Office on Tuesday confirmed the death of Jeremy Parks, 28. The army admitted Sunday it had killed Parks during clashes with ELN guerrillas in the area near Choco in northwestern Colombia, 600 kilometers (375 miles) northwest of the capital Bogota. But they could not say whether Parks had been fighting alongside the ELN or if he was a hostage held by the rebel group. The ELN said in a statement that it had indeed kidnapped Parks early Sunday, only to release him two hours later, but condemned the army for his killing. "After assassinating him, the army dressed him in a military uniform, then told the press about his death during the clashes," the ELN said. The ELN often uses kidnapping for ransom as a source of income. Parks had recently been in Cuba, Peru and Ecuador before entering Colombia in September on a 60-day visa. Parks, who hailed from Bromley, southeast London, was a backpacker and had no criminal record nor links with extremist groups, a spokesman for the British embassy in Bogota told AFP on Tuesday. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
