Statement by Kurdish Centre for Human Rights, 2nd November 2001: Kurdish Centre for Human Rights Tel: +41/ 22/ 328 19 84, Fax: +41/ 22/ 328 19 83, E-mail: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>[EMAIL PROTECTED], Address: 15 rue des Savoises, Geneva - Switzerland ---------- Yet Another Murder! In a period when HADEP (The Peoples Party ) were continuing their regional tour, visiting the cities of Kurdistan, pressure by local police and military was mounting up. Police began raiding homes and threatening people. On 30th October at 00:30 hours in Dogubeyazit-Ararat, Burhan Kockar a HADEP member was murdered in his home by 10 Turkish police officers. The witness to the murder Ufuk Kockar, the wife of Burhan Kockar, gave a detailed account of the murder. She said that, "my husband woke for sahur (meal taken before dawn to fast) and the door knocked and he went to open the door. I was still in the bedroom. As he opened the door I heard three gunshots. A terrible sensation came to me, I went into shock. When I went to the door to see, my husband was on the floor near the door, covered in blood. In front of him 10 police officers with snow masks were waiting. While one was pushing me inside he said to his friend 'why did you shoot'" (translated from Ozgur Politika, 02/11/2001). This shocking account of the murder just highlights the way things run in Turkey. Approximately a year from now two HADEP Silopi administrators, Serdar Tanis and Ebubekir Deniz, were taken to custody by the gendarme, and since, are still missing. These murders continue because the Turkish government turns a blind eye to these murders. A thorough investigation is not carried out and the result "YET ANOTHER MURDER!", murder as observed by the wife of Burhan Kockar, by masked police officers. The murderers of Burhan Kockar were police officers, officials who are paid by the State to protect civilians. Human rights violations are continued by Turkish officials. When State police begin to act like bandits and that state does not punish does bandits, these assassins will continue. We condemn these murders does who do not punish them. We call on the Turkish government to act quick against this murder. We call on all democratic intellectuals, institutions and organisations to condemn this and act to pressure the Turkish government to solve this murder, arrest those who perpetuated it, stop the terror of raiding homes.
