'India rejected US offer of military alliance'
Indian Express,
New Delhi, November 9: The U.S. had approached India with a proposal for a
"major military alliance" but this was rejected by the Cabinet Committee on
Security (CCS), according to a report published in a weekly.
In a press release issued on Friday, India Today claimed that a report based
on confidential documents by its editor Prabhu Chawla revealed that
Washington had approached the Indian government with such a proposal.
However, it said that the CCS, which deliberated on this at its meeting on
October 19 and November three, rejected the proposal.
The magazine said that the Bush administration's proposal would have, in
effect, made India the foremost military ally of the U.S in Asia.
The proposal envisaged a central role for India as a counterweight to China
on one hand, and Islamic states of West Asia on the other, it said.
The American proposal envisaged military bases in India for training its
forces and these included the establishment of a naval firing range and land
training facilities.
In addition, Washington also wanted the Indian navy to safeguard American
interests from the Arabian Sea to the Straits of Malacca by providing escort
for its naval supply ships. In the event of these ships being attacked, the
Indian navy was expected to engage the enemy, according to the proposal.
