He was convicted in his absence. The man carried out bombings and kidnappings during Israel's occupation of south Lebanon. The sentencing of Ali al-Sayyed raises to 56 the number of militiamen sentenced to death in absentia since the trials began in June last year. The 2,500-strong SLA militia collapsed after Israeli forces ended their 18-year occupation of southern Lebanon in May 2000. About 2,200 former militiamen have since surrendered to Lebanese authorities or been captured. The rest, mostly high-ranking officers, fled with their families to Israel or other countries. Since June 2000, the military court has sentenced more than 3,000 people for collaboration with Israel to jail terms of up to 25 years. Lebanon considers itself at war with Israel and contact with the Israelis is punishable under the law. The court also sentenced Khalil Abboud to nine months' imprisonment for serving with the SLA and entering Israel. The court's verdicts cannot be appealed against.
