THE WAR IS NOT OVER The War Is Not Over The crowing of war supporters at the apparent capitulation of the foul Taliban regime in Afghanistan cannot hide the fact that in no way can the war there be said to be over. Even if the Taliban do completely disintegrate, that's far from the end of the story. The *day before* the Northern Alliance took Kabul, Bush was telling the world that he didn't want them to. The US has been very reticent about helping the Alliance for many reasons it would seem. But not least must be the US war aim to set up a reliable, pliant government in Afghanistan - this has not happened. It looks like the Alliance are none too keen on "peace keeping"/occupation forces going in now that they reckon they've won. There are reports of massacres of captured Taliban soldiers and street fighting in Kabul and other towns. A situation of civil war may be on the cards, which the US and other powers will engage in in the pursuit of strategic advantage in this key region. The situation is more than likely to get even more messy it seems. And then there's US interests further afield to roll on to. We wonder where bin Laden or some other "new Satan" will "pop up" next? Iraq? Southern ex-Soviet states? Yemen? There are already mentions being made of a new attack on Iraq (in addition to the constant bombing and sanctions campaign of US and British capital). It's even more vital that workers everywhere stand up against this outbreak of war, destruction and invasion, and, what is more, oppose all examples of capitalist barbarity. But we must go further, and actively work for the abolition of capitalism: the outdated system whose squabbles over markets, trade and supply routes, raw materials and strategic competition are the cause of war. Who knows what new horrors our masters have in store for us if we allow them to continue controlling our lives? Capitalism is ever more war-prone, and cannot be reformed!
