KOL. 27 November 2001. Maoists attack army post.

KATHMANDU -- Maoists attacked an army camp at Charikot, the headquarters
of Dolkha district at 1:05 a.m. Wednesday morning.

This is the first time that the Maoists have attacked an army post since
the state of emergency was declared and the Royal Nepal Army ordered
against the Maoists.

The state run Radio Nepal reported that the fighting left several
Maoists dead. But it gave no figures. It also said that there were no
casualties among the army and the police.

The rebels hurled socket bombs from two side of the camp and fired from
one side of the camp. Army sources said the army personnel stationed in
the camp retaliated and chased the attackers away.

Around mid-night there were some torch rallies and sloganeering near the
camp, said the source.

Security forces have been put on high alert in the area after the
attack. The camp is close to the district administration offices and the
police offices. The Chief District Officer and other government
officials have been kept under the protection of the army.
