Subject: [Peoples War] Nepal: media repression
AFP. 28 November 2001. Nepal warns local media over coverage of Maoists.
KATHMANDU -- Nepal's government has warned domestic media not to publish
any news in the next six months that "could encourage" Maoist rebels who
have relaunched an armed struggle to topple the constitutional monarchy,
state-run radio said Wednesday.
"The ministry of communications and information has notified the
Nepalese media to refrain from publishing news that could encourage
those wanting to set up a republic in the country, fight 'people's war,'
or commit looting, kidnapping (or) arson," the radio said.
"Accordingly, it has asked the media not to publish interviews,
articles, news and others materials that are against the state," it
said.
The guidelines will be in force for six months, said state radio, which
did not specify punishments for journalists found to violate the rules.
Separately Wednesday, the Nepali-language afternoon newspaper Aparanha
said the government has banned 30 organizations found to be affiliated
with the Maoists.
The groups include student and women's groups sympathetic to the rebels,
the newspaper said.
