Nato agrees eight-point strategy to support US
BY A CORRESPONDENT
NATO has agreed to all eight of Americas specific
requests for logistical and military support in its
campaign against terrorism, Lord Robertson of Port
Ellen, the Alliance Secretary-General, said yesterday.
Support measures, to be taken individually and
collectively, include the provision of some of Natos
17 early-warning aircraft and the deployment, if
needed, of ships to the eastern Mediterranean.
Lord Robertson said the backing of Nato demonstrated
the commitment of the European Alliance partners to
support and contribute to the US-led assault against
terrorism. He gave warning that those prepared to
confront terrorism may face problems.
It took the Allies 24 hours to assess and accept the
requests for specific help lodged by Washington, which
amount to an eight-point plan for Natos involvement
in any forthcoming offensive against Osama bin Laden
and the Taleban regime in Afghanistan.
Lord Robertson said the accord would operationalise
Article 5 of the Alliance Treaty, which states that an
attack on one member of the Alliance is an attack on
them all. He said the Allies had agreed to:
Enhance intelligence-sharing and co-operation with the
United States against terrorist threats.
Provide assistance to Allies and other states.
Increase security for the US and other Allies on Nato
territory.
Provide Allied equipment back-up for the US.
Provide blanket overflight clearance for the US and
other Allied aircraft.
Provide access to ports and airfields on Nato
territory.
Be ready to deploy Standing Naval Forces to the
eastern Mediterranean.
Be ready to deploy elements of the Airborne Early
Warning force.
