Balkans soldiers may move to Afghanistan

US soldiers and planes serving in the Balkans could be moved to
Afghanistan if the war is stepped up a gear.

The announcement came from Nato Secretary General Lord Robertson.

In addition, unmanned surveillance aircraft could also be moved from
Macedonia.

Lord Robertson added that he could not rule out the possibility that
Nato troops might be asked to fill gaps left by the US forces if they
were needed elsewhere.

Speaking to CNN, he said any movement of troops from the Balkans would
depend on how America viewed the success of the war effort.

He commented: "There are something like 10,000 American troops in the
Balkans at the present moment.

"But there's also a lot of other assets in the area, highly specialised
assets like the unmanned aerial vehicles, the pilotless planes.

"And it may be that if they are moved closer to Afghanistan, then the
Nato allies will have to fill that gap.

He added: "But of course, if the American troops were required on the
front lines, then there are Nato troops that would be more than willing
to fill their positions.

"But I know a number of Nato countries don't want simply to back all of
the Americans. They want to be there on the front line with the United
States in this campaign against terrorism, which is, after all, an
affliction that could as easily happen to them or damage them, as it has
damaged the US."
