Military officials in Sri Lanka say there's been a sea battle with Tamil
Tiger rebels off the island's north-eastern coast.
A military spokesman said a naval patrol had intercepted a flotilla of rebel
boats and at least two of the ten rebel vessels were destroyed.

The navy said one of its ratings and about twenty-five Tamil Tiger rebels
were killed in the battle, nearly 35km off the coast of the rebel-controlled
district of Mullaitivu.

There has been no comment from the Tamil Tigers.

There have been at least two sea battles in the past month, and the rebels
who want a separate Tamil state in northern and eastern Sri Lanka recently
warned civilians against travelling on government-owned ferries.
