Congratulate Coal Workers For Successful Strike

New Delhi, December 5: We warmly congratulate six lakh coal mine workers for the unprecedented successful three days strike on December 3-5 2001 in protest against the bill to privatize coal mining sector, non-payment of due wage arrears of NCWA-VI and other demands.

The strike was total in most of the coalmines and establishments of all the coal companies demonstrating remarkable unity of the coal workers irrespective of affiliations in the struggle against the anti-PSU and anti-worker policy of the government. All attempts made by the Coal India management and the government of India to break/weaken the strike through mis-information and divisive campaign etc failed miserably.

We urge upon the government of India to take into account the strong resentment among the coal workers and also their strong determination to fight as demonstrated by the three-day strike action, and not to pursue the bill to privatize the coalmining sector.

We appeal to the coal mine workers to strengthen the magnificent unity achieved during the strike and be prepared for a long drawn struggle to oppose privatisation of coal mines, if the government of India continues to pursue the same suicidal policies of privatisation.
