AP. 6 December 2001. Fighting Between Nepalese Rebels, Soldiers Kills
330 in Two Weeks.

KATHMANDU -- About 250 Maoist guerrillas and 80 soldiers have been
killed in two weeks of fierce fighting in Nepal's remote hills, the
government said Thursday.

More than 100 rebels have been arrested, Minister for Information
Jayaprakash Gupta said.

"The military operation against the rebels is continuing and most of
(it) is concentrated in the midwestern region," Gupta said.

The hills of midwestern Nepal, 250 miles west of the capital Katmandu,
are where rebels started a violent campaign in 1996 to abolish Nepal's
constitutional monarchy and create a socialist republic.

"We have not been able to determine how many rebels have been killed but
we think there could be a lot more than the bodies we have recovered,"
Gupta said. "Most of the bodies have been mutilated beyond recognition
so we have not been able to identify them."

Troop transportation into remote areas has been hampered by the thick
fog that envelops the hills most of the day and the lack of helicopters,
Gupta said.
