21 policemen Hurt in Northern Ireland Riot
=============================

LONDON, December 10 (Xinhua) -- At least 21 policemen and three
soldiers were injured Sunday night when rioting broke out in south
Armagh in Northern Ireland, The Times reported on Monday.

Two of the policemen were flown to hospital after being
attacked by a mob armed with iron bars, petrol bombs, bottles and
fireworks. Four republicans were arrested, the paper said.

The trouble began with republican protests at two security
watchtowers and a police station in an attempt to force the pace
of British demilitarization.

Local people taking part in the protest said they were unhappy
that demilitarization promised by the British government had not
happened as quickly as they had hoped.

In October, work began to dismantle four security installations
immediately following the IRA's decision to put some of its
weapons beyond use. It was the first response from the UK
Government to the IRA announcement, which breathed new life into
the peace process.

Demilitarization was a key demand from Sinn Fein during
discussions before the breakthrough.

In another development, an eight-year-old girl were injured by
rioters on Sunday night in North Belfast, capital of northern
Ireland, where there has been sporadic rioting in interface areas
between nationalists and loyalists since the summer.
