Protests Mark Start of EU Summit on Defense, Reform. BRUSSELS -- European Union leaders began a summit Friday poised to take a first step toward becoming a military power and launch ambitious constitutional reform drive. Several thousand anti-capitalist activists marched along an agreed route toward the summit venue at Brussels' neo-classical Laeken royal palace, but the mood was calm and festive, and riot police kept a low profile. "Good for the rich, bad for the poor. We don't want your capitalist war," the protesters chanted. Under the banner of "another Europe for another world," activist organisations including a group calling itself D14, said EU policies go "against the aspirations of the people" because they pursue capitalism, free trade and the American economic model. Organiser Olivier Bailly said the march protests everything from capitalism to peace efforts in Central Africa. "Through these different struggles we want to give a clear message, a more social and human Europe," he said. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
