Along with the dead, more than 50 were injured, and 15 were arrested, officials said. The main Israeli military action was aimed at Palestinian militants in Gaza who have been firing mortars at Israeli targets. Tanks and armoured vehicles entered Beit Hanoun before dawn and took part in running battles during the day. Shortly after the Israelis pulled out of the town at sunset, Palestinian mortar fire resumed, the army said. Israel sent helicopters into the area, firing several rockets and damaging at least two Palestinian police offices near Beit Hanoun. The buildings had been evacuated and no injuries were reported. In other developments, US envoy Anthony Zinni, who failed to broker a truce over the past three weeks, is returning to Washington for consultations on how to deal with the Middle East crisis, the US State Department said. And in New York, the US vetoed a UN Security Council resolution backed by the Palestinians, which condemned terror acts and called for international monitors to supervise a Middle East truce. The US said the measure was aimed at isolating Israel politically. Hanan Ashrawi, a prominent Palestinian spokeswoman, said the US veto was effectively giving Israel "a free hand to attack Palestinians - defenceless, captive, besieged Palestinians".
