Revised law gives more parliamentary seats to women

The National Assembly on December 20 passed a revised law on the election of
its deputies by a vote of 89.1% in favour. The revised law includes a new
measure to increase the number of women legislators.

The amended Article 10a states that the number of female deputies in the
National Assembly will be decided by the National Assembly Standing
Committee, on the basis of the proposal made by the Women's Union Central
Committee Presidium, to ensure an appropriate number of female delegates.

The updated law has also strengthened the national law-making body by
raising the maximum number of deputies to 500 from 450.

Moreover, article 49 confirms the right of all citizens to express their
complaints about candidates or about mistakes in the list of candidates. The
Election Council will be responsible for recording and dealing with
complaints, it says.

However, the revised law also states that anonymous letters of complaint and
denunciation shall not be considered or settled. (VNA)
