AFP. 25 December 2001. Fidel Castro offers message of support to
Argentina's Rodriguez Saa.

HAVANA -- Cuban President Fidel Castro sent a message of support to the
new Argentine President Adolfo Rodriguez Saa, hailing his decision to
redirect money from servicing its debt towards social programs, Granma
reported Tuesday.

Rodriguez Saa assumed the presidency Sunday after violent riots and
widespread unrest that killed 30 people over the latest austerity
measures taken by Buenos Aires to end 43 months of recession prompted
the resignation of Fernando de la Rua two years before the end of his
term.

"The dramatic and shocking events experienced by Argentina, not to
mention the challenge you and your government face, means you deserve
the strong support of all the people of Latin America, the Caribbean and
the world," Castro said.

Rodriguez Saa on Monday launched plans to print a new currency and
create a million jobs in the wake of a default on the country's 132
billion-dollar public debt, the largest in history.
