Line for Argentine Presidency Quits.

BUENOS AIRES -- Argentine Senate Chief Ramos Puerta, next in line for
the presidency after Adolfo Rodriguez Saa resigned, quit early on
Monday, his spokesman said.

"The provisional president of the Senate, Ramon Puerta ... sent his
resignation by fax," the spokesman said. Local media reports said
Puerta, who held the presidency for two days a week ago after Fernando
de la Rua quit as president amid looting and riots, was suffering from
ill health.

Following Puerta's resignation, the provisional presidency should fall
to Peronist Eduardo Camano, head of the lower house of deputies. He
would hold the post for two days before Congress appoints an interim
leader, who would have 90 days to call new elections.

Outside the presidential country house in Chapadmalal, more than a
hundred demonstrators banged pots and shouted insults on Sunday -- a
smaller version of the protests that rocked the government Friday night
and Saturday.
