CORRUPTION INSTITUTIONNELLE AUX USA (by Investigator) Selon l'hebdomadaire Newsweek, le budget attribu� � la CIA pour corrompre des responsables �trangers et payer des informateurs a �t� multipli� par dix depuis le 11 septembre. Le budget "corruption" des agences de renseignement am�ricaines a �t� multipli� par dix depuis le 11 septembre, affirme l'hebdomadaire Newsweek dans son �dition du 31 d�cembre. Il s'agit de la somme permettant de payer des responsables �trangers et de r�mun�rer des informateurs, pr�cise l'hebdomadaire, citant une source non identifi�e des services de renseignement. Jeudi 27 d�cembre, le Congr�s a vot� un accroissement significatif des moyens financiers des services de renseignements. Ce texte, class� secret, pr�voierait "plusieurs milliards de dollars de plus que l'an dernier." Le budget des services de renseignement n'est jamais rendu public aux Etas-Unis. Les d�penses annuelles de la centrale de renseignement (CIA) et d'une douzaine d'autres organisations d'espionnage sont estim�es par des experts � 30 milliards de dollars. Newsweek, citant le s�nateur r�publicain Richard Shelby, rappelle aussi que la CIA a "re�u un feu vert, par ordre pr�sidentiel", de se lib�rer" du cadre l�gal qui lui interdisait depuis le milieu des ann�es 1970 les assassinats � l'�tranger. Avec le soutien du pr�sident et du Congr�s, les forces am�ricaines doivent "faire tout ce qu'il faudra" pour gagner la guerre antiterroriste, a pr�cis� M. Shelby, membre de la commission s�natoriale sur le renseignement. Elles doivent poursuivre les hommes d'Al-Qa�da et, "s'ils r�sistent, les tuer. S'ils se rendent, faisons-les prisonniers. On 26th of November the puppet king Gyanendra who is blamed for the June 1st Royal family massacre including king Birendra and Prince Dipendra by collaborating with India and the CIA, declared the state of emergency and deployed the Royal Nepalese army for the first time against its own people. India has offered what ever efforts is necessary. USA, Russia, Japan and EU backed the barbaric Ordinance and the state of emergency. With the declaration of the state of emergency, constitutional rights of the people are suspended and the ordinance is issued which gives the power to the army, police and bureaucracy what ever they do in the name of control of the rebels. The independent news and media are restricted. The media are allowed to publish and broadcast only after the permission of the army. The independent and progressive newspapers are closed and the journalists are arrested. The editor, composer and the reporters of Daily Janadidha, weekly Janadesh, Dishabodh, Janasangharsa and several other journalists have been imprisoned without any of charge just for suspicion of the sympathetic to the Maoists because they reported the whatever actions were taken places around the country. For other mainstream media also dictating by the dictatorial regime by issuing the directives- what can and what cannot be published. The government says helping the Maoists, sheltering them, financial assistance or the publish or statement of the opinion of Maoists is also a terrorism. They would be life sentenced. The security authorities are allowed to shot on sight anyone being suspect of involving or harbouring the terrorism with the arm or without the arm to stop or control them. Even if the person suspected of being involved in terrorism are living outside the country at the moment, they would be charged with the local laws. There is only the military have right to exercise any thing what ever they like. Following the emergency thousands of people have been arrested and hundreds have been killed, hundreds of millions of property have been looted by the state armed forces. The reports sent by close sources said soldiers have been gang raped hundreds of women. The situation of arrested persons is unknown. So-called democratic state's military regime came to repress the rights of people. The human rights and constitution is just to show but nothing than mere for the masses of people. The army has killed several hundred unarmed people. The government appeal who ever who do not support the army would be branded as terrorist and shot on sight weather he/she is armed or unarmed. This present operation is just a expanded form of the Killo Seara-2. The nepalese army is doing as what the comrade Mao explained in his works against the reactionary army of Cheng Kai Shek. The masses are the main enemy of the reactionary army that's why they are killing the innocent people. To hide out they have imprisoned the journalists, tortured them and killed them. The army which is morally defeated, is saw their victory in making illusion among the masses. The state terror leads almost millions people to go for hiding. The necessity of the armed struggle increased more than ever before. There is no democracy which is proved well. There is no law and the constitution which was not made by the people but the king had provided could not protect the country and the people. The demand of the constituent assembly is far more important and otherwise the republic of Nepal only can guarantee the rights of the people. The state now coming with its real appearance against the people and the nation. Who wants to bring the foreign forces in the country? Who is getting financial and armament assistance to continue the war instead of the peaceful solution proposed by the Maoist ? The army which could not fight the guerrillas in a battlefield is now shamelessly saying they have killed the this and that person who did not give arrest or tried to escape from the circle of the army. There is no justification of any of the killing of the innocent people. The reactionaries are being so angry and they wanted the Maoist to come in confrontation. But Maoists who are serious and depend upon the support of the masses are tolerable. To bring the Peoples liberation army in to direct confrontation the reactionary forces are arresting or capturing the ordinary supporters of the revolution and killed them after torture and rape and gang rape. Not to expose their shameful and degrading lower moral they assassinate the people of being captured. It is obviously false that the ready-made formula of propaganda "S/he or a group of people have been killed in an encounter or in search and cordon operation. The police or the army recovered this or that number of weapons or armour. Hundreds of thousands of people who did not understand or ready to pick the arms against the barbaric regime are now compelled to fight. The material necessity of the situation is powerful than the ideal understand. But when ideological and material conditions matches no reactionary madness defeat the power of the people. Media specially the government owned are the part of this encirclement and inhilation campaign. They are trying to keep people in misinformed about the reality. Those media as the army asked trying to show the army is brave. For the killing of innocent and unarmed people they are misinforming as killed in an encounter. The reactionary armed forces despite their privilege in arms, communication, structure and supply are not able to confront with the peoples army. Despite their superior firepower they are not able to go in base areas. They just destroying the surrounding regions not to be trapped. All of killings up to now seems to get the informations about the strategy of the PLA. By killing of the people whatever they make propaganda the masses understand the reality. For instance the number of dead guerrillas are extremely exaggerated by the reactionary media. Not only government owned but so-called private also. It is clear that the some private media also supported the government oppression by promising to provide the false information whatever the army or authorities supplies. Puskar lal shrestha wrote in samacharpatra (30th of December) the owners of Kantipur, Kamana group, space-time and utsarga publication decided to help the emergency move of the government at least from those medias where they have participation. The journalists working in those are ordered not to report the news independently. Some of them are threatened the journalists working there to expel from the job and to hand over to the army. The other where they were not participate or didn't agreed to provide the false information are imprisoned or went underground. How foul game the government is playing is not hiding. Even in the second world war also red cross and the doctors also allowed to help injured soldiers but now the government of Nepal issued the warning not to treat any of injured person. Otherwise they would be charged as a terrorist. The lawyers who would take the cases of suspected maoists would be killed as per the emergency declaration. The professors, teachers, students, intellectuals etc. are imprisoned. Journalists who reports or writes independently which is not as the will of the government are imprisoned. The editors of Sanghu and Deshanter which always wrote against the maoists also arrested. Out of capital tens of thousands of people have been detained, tortured and released with conditions to be a spy. Who ever like to be remained neutral were the majority of the victim. In Dang as main opposition and others also accepted the tillers (11) who were harvesting the rice were shot dead, in Salyan the people who were worshipping the clan ship were shot as terrorists, several women, children and the health workers (government employees-4) were shot in a place where vaccination was going on according to the government plan. In Ramechhap-Doramba jungle where the people were gathering to celebrate the traditional ceremony of local festival were blindly fired by the army from the helicopter. In these incident more than a hundred people killed. The Radio Nepal, Nepal television and those who committed to support the barbaric criminal white terror reported 11 or 12 or 70 guerrillas killed in encounter with the army. They recovered guns, grenades, explosives and ammunitions some of them looted from army and police. Ah! You are not shame, you don't feel humiliation to report which is hundred percent wrong or partially wrong. It was right people were killed by the army but they were not guerrillas. They were innocent people. They were poor people. They were self respected people. They did not sell themselves for money. The army is failed in their operation. They withdrew from the positions which were located nearby the maoist strongholds. If somebody have the knowledge of the war strategy would see the defeat of the Royal army surely. Maoists are spreading among the people as a fish in water. The enemy is killing frog in illusion of fish. Which would led them to be defeated ultimately. Once more the strategy of the peoples war is proved that the enemy has no alternative of encirclement and inhilation. They go in to the assistance of false things like Gobbles propaganda. The victory would be the revolutionaries. Of course it is painful to see the killing of innocent masses or the unarmed members of mass organisations. ESTADOS UNIDOS IGNORARA A LA ONU PARA SUS GUERRAS BRUSELAS.� Estados Unidos est� decidido a no contar absolutamente con la Organizaci�n de Naciones Unidas (ONU) para desatar guerras en cualquier lugar del mundo que estime bajo el pretexto de la lucha contra el terrorismo. Esa fue en la pr�ctica la postura de Donald Rumsfeld, secretario de Defensa de Estados Unidos, al declarar en esta capital, durante una reuni�n de la OTAN, que su pa�s no necesita de la ONU para decidir si expande su campa�a militar contra Afganist�n a otros pa�ses y trat� de dar una excusa al decir que el terrorismo es "global". El Ministro de Guerra norteamericano aleg� en una conferencia de prensa que "cualquier medida de la ONU contempla el derecho a la autodefensa" y lanz� una velada amenaza al decir que algunos pa�ses tienen activas c�lulas de Al Qaida y que "Yemen es uno de ellos, as� como Sud�n, mientras que Somalia tambi�n es un lugar en el que pasaron tiempo dirigentes de la organizaci�n terrorista". PL interpreta estas declaraciones como un llamado a extender el conflicto fuera de Afganist�n e incluso, fuera del terrorismo, pues, al citar a Rumsfeld, destaca que el personaje guerrerista consider� "un grave error concluir, tras lo ocurrido en septiembre en Estados Unidos, que el terrorismo es la nueva y �nica amenaza de nuestras democracias". Esta tendencia de aplicar la doctrina de fuerza de la �nica superpotencia se apreci� en la reuni�n de la OTAN de los ministros de Defensa, quienes acordaron ajustar sus estructuras y medios "a las nuevas realidades mundiales". Europa, como otras veces, parece ir amarrada al carro de la pol�tica norteamericana, pues los ministros acordaron aumentar la capacidad de intervenci�n fuera de las fronteras de la OTAN, es decir, de alcance mundial. Mientras, en Tora Bora, los hombres de los jefes tribales que combat�an a la organizaci�n Al Qaida comenzaron a retirarse hacia sus casas, al tiempo que las fuerzas especiales norteamericanas buscan en las cuevas alguna pista que los lleve a Bin Laden, a quien tambi�n intentan reconocer entre los muertos que existen en las cavernas. En Kabul, se dijo que la Alianza del Norte acept� que las fuerzas internacionales que deben supuestamente asegurar el "mantenimiento de la paz y la seguridad" sean de unos 5 000 hombres. Coincidentes con estas declaraciones, el diario The Independent y la BBC, ambos de Londres, se�alaron que Estados Unidos prepara una serie de bombardeos a�reos contra Somalia, utilizando bases de la vecina Kenia. (GRANMA) REVUE DE PRESSE : LA POUSSEE FINALE POUR VAINCRE LES PALESTINIENS (Par Jeff Halper - Israeli Committee Against Home Demolition ICAHD - 10 d�cembre 2001) � J�ai �crit ceci comme un morceau d�analyse pour mettre la violence actuelle au Moyen Orient dans une perspective politique plus large. Ce qu�il manque est un appel � l�action, la mobilisation de toutes les forces internationales � les gouvernements, les Nations Unies, les ONGs, les organisation confessionnelles, les m�dias, les universit�s, les individus concern�s � pour provoquer la cessation imm�diate des hostilit�s. Mais ce n�est pas assez. Un tel appel DOIT �tre bas� sur un engagement des Etats Unis et de l�Europe � ce que des n�gociations visant explicitement � finir d�finitivement l�occupation Isra�lienne et � assurer l��mergence d�un �tat palestinien viable et v�ritablement souverain soient inaugur�es dans une p�riode de temps d�finie. Ceci est notre seul agenda � ce moment fatidique, et il est impossible de sur�valuer l�urgence de nos efforts. A moins que nous agissions maintenant et efficacement, ce jour des Droits de l�Homme 2001, nous assisterons dans les prochaines semaines ou mois � la victoire de l�occupation sur le combat pour l�ind�pendance et � l��mergence d�encore une autre situation d�apartheid. Vue dans le contexte des tentatives de Bush de construire une � coalition contre la terreur � c�est un dernier effort d�sesp�r� pour ammener le � calme industriel � sur ce qui a �t� appel� le second front, le conflit isra�lo-palestinien, une pr�-condition pour constuire toute coalition soutenue qui inclue des pays arabes et musulmans. Ceci peut �tre accompli d�une parmi deux fa�ons. Soit une solution politique satisfaisante peut �tre impos�e aux parties avec beaucoups de bras tordus et de sueur, ou bien on peut faire que les palestiniens se soumettent aux dictats isra�lo-am�ricains. La premi�re, pr�f�r�e par les am�ricains comme r�solution du conflit, a rencontr� des obstacles fondamentaux � la fois des c�t�s isra�lien et palestinien. Les isra�liens refusent fermement de d�manteler leur occupation et d�abandonner le controle � un degr� qui permettrait � un �tat palestinien viable et v�ritablement souverain d��merger. Pour sa part, Arafat a �chou� � produire un programme coh�rent pour des n�gociations, et a gaspill� l�opportunit� que l�intifada lui a donn�e de recadrer les n�gociations dans une voie plus �quitable. En face d�un mouvement de r�sistance non cibl�, sans programme politique et aliment� par plus d�attaques violentes que jamais contre des cibles civiles isra�liennes, le gouvernement am�ricain semble avoir �t� persuad� par Sharon et Peres de choisir la seconde option : vaincre les palestiniens compl�tement. Etant donn�es leurs �ch�ancres serr�es pour la construction de la coalition et les actions militaires, les am�ricains recherchent une correction rapide, une p�riode raisonnable de calme industriel au Moyen Orient. Se permettre � eux-m�mes d��tre persuad�s que Israel peut ammener l�autorit� palestinienne � ses genoux dans l�affaire de semaines, par l� r�ouvrant le � processus de paix � dans des termes favorables � Israel, a ses attraits. En pr�servant la partialit� am�ricaine de longue date fortement en faveur d�Israel, cela �vite les conflits avec le Congr�s solidement pro-isra�lien (89 s�nateurs ont publi� r�cemment une lettre mettant en garde Bush de ne pas compromettre les int�r�ts isra�liens), et cela peut �tre � vendu � commeune vengeance l�gitime contre le � terrorisme palestinien � - l�gitimant par l� la tentative de Sharon de lier Arafat et les palestiniens int�gralement avec Bin Laden et le terrorisme mondial anti-am�ricain/anti-� civilisation �. Etant donn� la positionnpolitique faible, presque incoh�rente des palestiniens, cette option semble la plus r�alisable au pr�sent. Et puis, Sharon a re�u le � feu vert � de Bush pour ammener le calme dans la r�gion par des moyens militaires, pour �tre suivi (sans h�te ici) par des n�gociations qui donneront aux palestiniens un mini-�tat tout en laissant � Israel le controle de la zone entre le fleuve Jourdain et la Mediterran�e. (Il a �t� rapport� aux nouvelles de Channel One, le vendredi 7 d�cembre au soir, que Sharon a promis � Bush de ne pas tuer ou blesser Arafat, ce � quoi Bush a r�pondu : � Promettez-moi seulement que vous ne le tuerez pas. �) La strat�gie de Sharon, Peres et des autres du gouvernement d� � Unit� Nationale � a quatre �l�ments majeurs : 1)- Des actions militaires massives. Etat de si�ge, frappes militaires contre les infrastructures palestiniennes fragiles et assassinat des figures cl� de la politique et de la r�sistance � la sorte de frappes utilisant des armes lourdes am�ricaines auxquelles nous assistons maintenant (d�but d�cembre) � sont fondamentaux pour intimider les palestiniens (et les forcer) � la soumission. Mais les actions militaires manifestes doivent �tre cadr�es avec soin de fa�on � maintenir l�image d�israel comme celle de la pure victime � la recherche de la paix et � d�tourner l�attention de la poursuite et de l�approfondissement de l�occupation, toujours plus brutale. A la suite des actes violents contre Israel, elles sont fondues comme une partie de la � guerre contre le terrorisme �, en fait comme une partie du � droit naturel � d�Israel � d�fendre son peuple. Ayant retir� la r�ponse de son contexte politique � la lutte contre l�occupation ill�gale � Israel est alors libre de d�cha�ner son arsenal entier (� part nucl�aire) contre n�importe quelles cibles qu�elle souhaite pour une p�riode aussi longue qu�elle d�sire. N�importe quoi que nous puissions penser du terrorisme palestinien comme outil l�gitime politique et militaire, requalifier ces frappes militaires en � vengeances �, justifier ces destructions massives comme partie d�une � guerre � avec les palestiniens et masquer son occupation permettent � Israel de s�engager � la fois dans la r�pression politique et le terrorisme d��tat sans �tre tenue pour responsable. En r�alit� la cha�ne enti�re de causes � effets est perdue quand Israel pr�sente chaque attaque palestinienne comme un incident nouveau et s�par�, divorc� de l�occupation ou des actions pr�c�dentes d�Israel. La disproportion des attaques en octobre et d�cembre montre clairement comment des incidents sp�cifiques sont utilis�s pour des gains politiques et militaires � longue port�e. 2)- Une campagne d�attrition. Certainenment, les attaques militaires font partie de la campagne israelienne d�attrition con�ue pour d�stabiliser la r�sistance palestinienne avec le temps. Mais les politiques � long terme, moins visibles et moins dramatiques, ne sont pas moins efficaces. Les d�molitions de maisons, l�expropriation de la terre, la fermeture permanente et les couvre-feux prolong�s, les restrictions de la liberrt� de mouvement, l�apauvrissement induit, la guerre �conomique de diff�rentes fa�ons (comme raser les champs agricoles, arracher des milliers d�oliviers et d�arbres fruitiers, interdire les r�coltes, confisquer les r�serves de vivres et emp�cher la vente des produits), les d�portations bureaucratiques � tranquilles � et la sale guerre utilisant des collaborateurs � toutes ces choses et plus sapent la fabrication de la soci�t� palestinienne et affaiblissent sa capacit� de r�sister � l�occupation. La campagne est con�ue non seulement pour casser la volont� du peuple palestienien mais pour saper son soutien � l�autorit� palestinienne, en esp�rant faire se lever des dirigeants plus conformes. 3)- Cr�er des � faits � irr�versibles sur le terrain. Le projet grandiose d��tendre le controle d�Israel sur les territoires occup�s poursuivi syst�matiquement, suivant le � plan directeur � pr�sent� par Sharon � Begin en 1997, approche de la terminaison. Les recommendations de la commission Mitchell de geler la construction des colonies, dont les palestiniens et les autres ont l�air de penser qu�elles seront efficaces pour arr�ter l�occupation, est d�j� sans objet. Israel a d�j� assez de territoires et de colonies : 60% dela West bank et encore 60% de Gaza sont fermement sous son controle. 400 000 colons vivent dans quelques 200 colonies � travers la � ligne verte �. Maintenant, ses efforts sont destin�s � terminer l�oeuvre d�infrastructure n�cessaire pour consolider sa main-mise sur les territoires. La construction de 450 kilom�tres d�autoroutes et les routes de � contournement � qui relient les colonies mais cr�ent des barri�res massives au mouvement des palestiniens sont presque inaper�ues. Depuis que ces projets majeurs d�infrastructure ont �t� approuv� � et financ�s � par les am�ricains ils tombent hors des � gels � de la commission Mitchell. Ils constituent le dernier �l�ment cl� dans la matrice de controle que Israel a �tendu sur les territoires occup�s, et les bulldozers travaillent sans cesse pour terminer le syst�me. 4)- Tactiques de retardement. L�exigence de Sharon de � sept jours de calme � avant de mettre en oeuvre le rapport Mitchell a d�j� retard� de plusieurs mois la reprise des n�gociations. Le temps et � nouveau les � crises � sont fabriqu�s (souvent suivant des assassinats non provoqu�s, des d�molitipons de maisons et d�autres actes de la part d�Israel) qui fournissent un pr�texte pour ne pas mettre en oeuvre d�accords ou red�marrer les n�gociations. Les allusions non voil�es par des dirigeants politiques israeliens qu�ils chercheront seulement des � accords interimaires � � long terme plut�t qu�une r�solution du statut final laissera � Israel le controle de facto des territoires occup�s � ou au moins le controle suffisamment longtemps pour terminer sa matrice de controle irr�versible. 5)- D�l�gitimer l�autorit� palestinienne. Depuis le 11 septembre, le gouvernement israelien a travaill� infatigablement pour requalifier l�autorit� palestinienne en une partie int�grante du � terrorisme mondiale �. Sharon a appel� Arafat � notre Bin Laden � et suivant les attaques � Jerusalem et Haifa le gouvernement a �tiquet� officiellement l�autorit� palestinienne comme � entit� sponsor de la terreur � - esp�rant �videmment impartir aux palestiniens la m�me d�ligitimation internationale attach�e aux autres organisations terroristes reconnues. Ceci est le programme qui unit la large coalition du gouvernement d�Unit� Nationale d�Israel, du parti travailliste sur la � gauche � jusqu�au Likud, les religieux et les partis d�extr�me droite. A sa base il y a le socle en roc du refus de partager v�ritablement le pays avec les palestiniens, ni en un �tat, ni en deux. Cependant � et c�est la prise � Israel a besoin d�un �tat palestinien pour le � d�barrasser � des trois millions et demi de palestiniens des territoires occup�s qu�elle ne peut ni absorber (donner la citoyennet� � cette population annulerait l��tat � dominante juive) ni controler pour toujours par la force. Tandis que les palestiniens s�efforcent pour l�ind�pendance politique dans un �tat viable � c�t� d�Israel, Israel s�efforce pour ce qui s�appelle � autonomie-plus/ind�pendance-moins �, une sorte d�occupation par consentement qui laisse le controle du pays entier tout en la d�barassant de la population palestinienne. Ceci d�crit en trois mots (in a nutshell) tout ce dont le � processus de paix � de Oslo �tait � propos. Puisque que l�occupation-par-consentement ne sera pas accept�e volontairement par les palestiniens, mais une juste paix bas�e sur une v�ritable ind�pendance palestinienne �tant inacceptable pour Israel, Israel doit l�imposer aux palestiniens. Pour Israel aussi les �ch�ances sont courtes. Le � feu vert � de Bush est bon pour quelques semaines � peut-�ytre un peu plus long si � justifi� � par de nouvelles attaques contre des civils isra�liens � mais il rencontrera �ventuellement des obstacles majeurs : les recommendations de la commission Mitchell et le chef de la CIA Tenet qui (en) attend la mise en oeuvre, la mission du g�n�ral Zinni d�atteindre de cessez-le-feu, et le besoin arc-boutant d�entretenir une coalition incluant les pays arabes et musulmans. D�o�, la f�rocit� des attaques isra�liennes, la pouss�e finale pour vaincre les palestiniens une fois pour toutes. Il est une minute avant minuit. Israel a d�j� largement accompli son incorporation physique de la West Bank dans Israel en propre, fermant toute possibilit� d�un �tat palestinien viable. Si la campagne actuelle de r�pression r�ussit, l�occupation sera suivie par la cr�ation d�un mini-�tat palestinien d�pendant � une occupation-par-consentement permanente non pas (de la part) des palestiniens mais des Etats-Unis et d�une Europe conforme. Ce sont les jours fatidiques du compte : une paix juste bas�e sur deux �tats viables et souverains, ou l��megence d�un Bantoustan palestinien sous controle Israelien, un nouvel apartheid. "We are facing a new international political system after the suicide attacks. The world has seen more U.S. hegemonism in the year of 2001. In the region of Middle East, Israel has succeeded in using U.S. support to wage a war against Palestinians," said the information minister. "With the name of anti-terrorism, we have seen more Palestinian civilians killed by Israeli troops," Aridi noted. He also expressed regret that the Arab world can not unify a position to help Palestinians' intifada and face external pressure. While referring to the problem of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, Aridi said: "We have to take the refugee problem into consideration in our foreign policies. What we should do if they can not return to Palestine and remain in Lebanon?" It is estimated that more than 350,000 Palestinian refugees are currently staying in 12 refugee camps in Lebanon. KOMINFORM COLOMBIAN REBELS ATTACK FIVE TOWNS BOGOTA -- Colombian guerrillas waged scattered attacks over the New Year holiday, leaving 14 people dead on the eve of peace talks, officials said Tuesday 25 december. Among those killed were eight soldiers who died when they stumbled on a mine field. This round of violence began Monday, when FARC guerrillas attacked the western towns of Purace and Coconuco with machine guns and homemade mortars, damaging houses and destroying the towns' police posts, the military said. Two police officers died in Purace before troops backed by warplanes helped police fend off the rebels, said acting army chief Gen. Euclides Sanchez. The soldiers killed in the mine field had been pursuing rebels who had attacked Coconuco and then retreated into the mountains, Sanchez added. Also Monday 24, rebels attacked the two southern towns of Berruecos and San Silvestre, the military said. In Berruecos, three police died and three civilians were injured when rebels attacked the police post with mortars. On Tuesday 25, one FARC guerrilla died and three civilians were wounded during a rebel raid on a military base in Arauca state, near the border with Venezuela.
