From: Danielle Ni Dhighe <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [Peoples War] INLA issue warning to loyalists Derry Journal 4 January 2002 INLA issue warning to loyalists The Irish National Liberation Army has issued its clearest warning yet to loyalist paramilitaries since the organisation announced its ceasefire in 1998. In a New Year statement the INLA reaffirmed its commitment to its original ceasefire statement, but stated: "We...view with increasing concern the escalating attacks on the nationalist working class by hate-filled loyalism. "We warn that such attacks put an almost impossible strain on republicans. Unless there is a halt then a republican response is inevitable. "We commend the restraint that our volunteers, particularly in North Belfast, have shown over the last year. They have been found not wanting in defending working class communities. The disciplined and controlled response to provocative and murderous attacks is to be commended." The INLA - which declared its ceasefire in the wake of the Omagh atrocity - were responsible for the 1997 assassination of Loyalist Volunteer Force leader Billy Wright in Long Kesh. The republican paramilitaries' last act in Derry was the killing of Waterside loyalist Trevor Deeney outside his home in the Spring of 1998. In their original ceasefire statement of August 22 1998 the leadership stated: "We have accepted the advice and analysis of the Irish Republican Socialist Party that the conditions for armed struggle do not exist. "The Irish National Liberation Army has now shifted from the position of defence and retaliation to the position of complete ceasefire. "We have, however, nothing to apologise for in taking the war to the British and their loyalist henchmen. Those who preyed on the blood of nationalists paid a heavy price." Speaking to the 'Journal' from the sectarian hothouse of North Belfast, head of the IRSP's International Department, Derryman Terry Harkin, said: "I think that the INLA has made its position clear in past and the organisation is not renowned for doublespeak. "You have to stand this statement on its own - what the INLA says it means - history has taught." _________________________________________________ KOMINFORM P.O.
