*2. COLOMBIA: UNIONIST MURDERED
Rightwing paramilitaries murdered Colombian union leader Jairo
Chiva and tossed his body into a river in northwestern Colombia,
his family said on Dec. 23. Chiva was president of the Yondo
Workers' Union, in Antioquia department. He was kidnapped on Dec.
22 after being detained at an illegal roadblock set up by
paramilitaries of the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia
(AUC). "They told me they killed him because he collaborated with
the guerrillas, when Jairo did none of that," his wife Ionis
Jimenez said.
The National Federation of State Service Workers (Fenaltrase),
one of Colombia's main unions, charges that the AUC has an
"extermination plan" against the union and that it has killed at
least 150 of its members. Colombian unions have repeatedly asked
the United Nations and the International Labor Organization (ILO)
to intervene and help end the wave of murders of its workers.
