AFP. 9 January 2002. Former East German Stasi leaders to publish book.

LEIPZIG -- Twenty former leaders of the East German secret police, the
Stasi, are getting ready to publish a book to defend the former
communist regime's security policies.

The 1,000-page book is to be published in March.

Its authors include Gerhard Neiber and Wolfgang Schwanitz, both former
deputies to Stasi chief Erich Mielke, as well as the last East German
interior minister, Peter-Michael Diestel.

The authors said they had written the book, "Security -- on the defence
policies of the Ministry of State Security", to set the record straight
in light of current criticism about the Stasi's activities.
