Russia delays Cuban spy base pullout - general
MOSCOW, Jan 9 (Reuters) - Russia has had to put back plans to start
dismantling a big spy centre in Cuba next week, the Russian general
in charge of the operation was quoted as saying.
Lieutenant-General Viktor Denisov told Interfax news agency that the
operation to dismantle the Lourdes electronic spying centre could not
start on its target date because of delays to the departure of three
transporter planes from Moscow.
Denisov, who commands the military transporter division which will
oversee the operation, said financial problems were holding up the
dispatch of the three An-124 planes which will bring back hardware
from the Cuban base.
Dismantling the centre had been scheduled to begin on January 15.
Denisov did not offer another projected date for work to start but
said the crews of the planes were ready to leave at a moment's
notice.
Closure of the Lourdes eavesdropping centre outside Havana, from
which Moscow listened in to U.S. secrets throughout the Cold War,
will end four decades of Russian military presence on the Caribbean
island.
President Vladimir Putin announced last October that Moscow was
closing the base, citing economic reasons.
