Xinhuanet 2002-01-11 04:46:05

LUANDA, January 10 (Xinhuanet) -- The Angolan Armed Forces (FAA)
have aborted a National Union for the Total Independence of Angola
(UNITA) rebels attack on two villages in the coastal central
Benguela Province.

Angolan news agency Angop Thursday quoted a military source in
Benguela as saying that during the action, three rebel soldiers
were killed and another one captured, whereas the rebels killed a
civilian young man.

The source said the rebels have been launching attacks against
villages aiming to plunder the population.

In addition, the agency reported that more than 17,000 people,
among inhabitants and war displaced people in the Luacano
Municipality of eastern Moxico Province, are in need of emergency
humanitarian assistance.

It cited Governor of Moxico Province Joao Ernesto dos Santos as
saying that the inhabitants in Luacano are deprived of food,
medicines and other foodstuff.

Meanwhile, thousands of children are out of schools due to the
lack of teachers in the district, the governor said.

The Angolan civil war, which broke out in 1975 soon after the
country's independence, has killed 1 million people with some 4
million displaced people.
