Resolution on war veterans' work

The Politburo, on January 8, issued a resolution on strengthening the Party
leadership of the work for Vietnamese war veterans in the new revolutionary
period. 

The resolution defines that, in face of the demand of revolutionary task in
the new period, the Party should strengthen its leadership in calling on war
veterans to continue promoting their tradition of 'Uncle Ho's soldiers in a
bid to bring into full play their great potentials in the national
construction and defence.

The resolution points out five tasks for war veterans in the new
revolutionary period, including:

1-Fostering war veterans so that they can improve their political spirit,
revolutionary virtue and knowledge of policies and lines of the Party and
the State as well as of economy, culture, science and technology. Taking
resolute action against viewpoints and ideas and guarding against any
conservative and inertial ideas.

2- Encouraging war veterans to further study and promote their potential,
together with people of all strata and armed forces, in economic, cultural
and social development process and implementation of democracy at grassroots
level. They are also called on to join the fight against bureaucracy,
corruption and social evils, consolidate and protect the Party,
administration, socialism and maintain political stability and national
defence and security.

3-Giving practical and concrete assistance to the movements to strengthen
unity among war veterans, develop home economy, eradicate hunger and reduce
poverty and boost gratitude activities among war veterans.

4-Encouraging war veterans to promote their nature and tradition of 'Uncle
Ho's soldiers' and educate their children to build families of new culture,
thus, making a positive contribution to disseminating the country's
patriotism, self-reliance and revolutionary heroism for young generation.

5-Calling on them to join people's activities of external relations and
contribute to materialising the lines and policies on external relations of
the Party and the State.

Vietnam, Laos sign bilateral agreement

Vietnam's Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and his Lao counterpart,
Thonglune Sisoulit, signed an agreement on economic, cultural, scientific
and technical co-operation for 2002 between the two countries in Vientiane
on January 15. 

Mr Dung and Sisoulit also concluded the minutes of the 24th meeting of the
Inter-governmental Committee for Economic, Cultural and Scientific-Technical
Co-operation between Vietnam and Laos, which opened in Vientiane the same
day. 

At the meeting, the two sides noted with pleasure the stronger development
in the two countries comprehensive co-operation. They said in 2001 - the
first year of their five-year bilateral co-operation - the two countries
implemented numerous major co-operative agreements for 2001-2005 in
education and training, agriculture and other areas.

They agreed that bilateral trade was boosted to help solve market
difficulties, contributing to improving the living conditions of people in
remote and isolated regions.

Both sides also noted with satisfaction the effective operation of projects
invested by Vietnamese businesses in Laos in production of medicines and
construction material and processing forest products.

In 2002, the two countries will continue to maintain bilateral co-operation
in the existing sectors and diversify the forms and content of their
co-operation. 

In trade, they will create favourable conditions for the exchange of goods
by issuing preferential tax policies, granting tax reduction to more items,
building border economic zones and upgrading border markets.

The two deputy prime ministers agreed to submit to the two governments a
number of measures to be taken to promote trade, investment, production and
business operations in each country.

At the meeting, Vietnam and Laos also signed an agreement on bilateral
co-operation in education and training, as well as regulations on financial
management of Vietnam's non-refundable aid to Laos. (VNA)

Cambodia returns remains of Vietnamese volunteers


Remains of 137 Vietnamese volunteers who died in Cambodia during the war
were handed over to the Vietnamese authorities at a ceremony held at the
Prech Charc border gate in Conpuong T'rach district of Kampot province on
Tuesday, January 15.

This is the first repatriation of the remains of Vietnamese volunteers since
an agreement between the governments of Vietnam and Cambodia was concluded

Taking the floor at the ceremony, Kampot's Mayor Putchan Darit said that the
remains were found from two operations of search conducted after July 20,
2001. 

He praised the sacrifices of Vietnamese volunteers to save the Cambodian
people from the Polpot genocidal regime, stressing "The Cambodian people
will never forget the help and sacrifices of the Vietnamese volunteers."

The same day, a memorial ceremony was held for these fallen combatants by
the administration of Kien Giang province, before they were reburied at a
martyr's cemetery in Ha Tien town.

Among those present at the ceremony was Lieutenant General Le Van Han,
deputy chief of the General Political Department of the Vietnam People's
Army. (VNA)

Vietnamese, French MPs' contribute to friendly ties

The Vietnam-France Friendship Parliamentarians Group has contributed
positively to the development of the friendly and co-operative ties between
the legislative agencies and countries of Vietnam and France.

The comment was shared by Deputy Chairman Nguyen Van Yeu, of Vietnam's
National Assembly, and Chairman of its Committee for External Relations Do
Van Tai, during meetings in Hanoi on January 15, with a delegation of the
France-Vietnam Friendship Parliamentarians Group of the Senate led by Group
President Jacques Oudin. The delegation has been in Hanoi since January 14
for a visit to Vietnam ending January 22.

Deputy Chairman Yeu also highlighted the fine development of the
Vietnam-France friendship and co-operation over the past years, saying
members of parliament (MPs) of the two countries have actively contributed
to that development.

He also expressed his wish that French MPs further contribute to
strengthening co-operation with Vietnam.

For his part, Jacques pledged closer co-operation with and assistance to
Vietnam's National Assembly, especially in law making.

He also dealt with the further co-operation with Vietnam in providing
training in law and the French language, information technology, tourism,
and aviation, as well as measures to boost bilateral co-operation in
economics, trade, and investment.

Speaking to NA's External Relations Committee Chairman Do Van Tai, Jacques
congratulated Vietnam for having made marked progress in the political and
economic lives. 

The French parliamentary delegation held a working session with a delegation
of the Vietnam-France Friendship Parliamentarians Group led by its
President, Phan Quang.

The two sides discussed how to boost co-operation and mutual assistance,
thus helping to develop relations between the two parliaments.

The delegation will have working sessions with the Ministry of Finance, the
Ministry of Planning and Investment, the Ministry of Education and Training
and the Tourism Administration. (VNA)

Prizes presented to Hanoi excellent products, businesses

A ceremony to present the �Gold Hanoi Prize� to 63 products and �Gold Hanoi
Cup� to 10 businesses was held by the Organising Board of the one-week long
�Vietnam Businesses Looking Forwards to the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long
- Hanoi� fair on January 15 at the Giang Vo Exhibition Centre.

The ten businesses that won the �Gold Hanoi Cup� are Xuan Hoa Company,
Thuong Dinh Footwear Company, Thuy Khue Footwear Company, Tran Phu Machinery
and Electric Company, the Vietnam-Czech Locking Company, Thang Long
Metalware Company, the Vietnam-Hungary Electric Machinery Manufacturing

Cane Holding Company and Miliket Food and Foodstuff Business.

The sixty three products that won the �Gold Hanoi Prize� title are those
with high quality and high popularity among consumers.
